foobar2000 not reading audio CDs

I am using foobar2000 1.0.3 without trouble to reproduce MP3, WAV and Wavpack music files.
But I cannot reproduce Audio CDs, even having tried it on 2 more PCs (with different hardware) and that Windows Media Player plays the CDs perfectly.

Ten minutes ago I tried again in my MSI Netbook and an extertnal  Samsung Slim DVD Writer Model SE-S084, with the same results.
foobar2000 showed this message:
Unable to open item for playback (Disc not available):
"cdda://0A12F170" / index: 1
and hanged up my PC for a while, until I disconnected the Samsung drive.

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP3 (the special version for MSI Netbooks) and the PC has CPU N270 @ 1.60Ghz 1GB RAM.
The driver is identified as TSST Corp CDDVDW SE-S084C USB Device
There is a second (virtual) drive identified as ELBY CLONEDRIVE SCSI CdRom Device

As I tried foobar2000 in 2 more PCs, I think the problem is not dependend on the hardware nor the OS.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, or instead foobar2000 presents a stil undiscovered bug.
Thanks for your answer.

When you have installed Foobar, are you sure you have installed audio CD capability?

Yes, I had installed all options. Anyway, I installed everyting anew, and the problem still persists. Moreover, I tried to add CD contents to a playlist, and foobar slowly switched between "adding to list" an "reading disk F:", and did no allow to be terminated. I then forced termination, and after trying to start it again, I got this message:

foobar2000 troubleshooter
The following components found on your system are known to be problematic and should be either uninstalled or updated to their latest versions:

Core : foobar2000 core 1.0
Reason: Various bugs fixed in the latest version; please update.
Download the latest version...

As said before, I have version 1.0.3 installed.

Do you mean this?:

(...)

The caption at the top of the window is: About foobar2000 v1.0

A remark: My Windows XP is a Spanish version. Who knows if this is important in this case???

The caption should say: About foobar2000 v1.0.3.

So update it to latest and try again.

I think Andreasvb only wanted to keep to the save side that you are really using v1.0.3 which is shown in the mentioned 'about'-window title and it appears that you are using v1.0, not v1.0.3

Does foobar's [main menu -> View] console give any error message when you are trying to open a CD track?

Please read also the sticky note at the top of the support forum to learn what further information you could provide to get support.

Edit: too slow...

This is an account of what I did after I read your post:
1. I completely uninstalled foobar2000 (Ccleaner Tools are faster for this task than the standard Windows Control Panel).
2. I also unistalled the virtual clone disk, since I do not need it anymore because I now own a real CD/DVD driver.
3. I used CCleaner to clean the Registry .
4. I closed and re-booted Windows.
5. I installed foobar2000 v.1.0.3 (in fact, somehow I had 1.0 before) with full options.
6. I inserted a music disk (not MP3) into the drive (I had not still tried MP3 on CD); I will do that tomorrow).
7. I started foobar2000 and clicked "Open Audio CD", and then "Add to playlist".
Then, foobar asked me to select my CD drive. Since now I have got only a real one, this was easy
After that, a pop up window appeared saying "Querying disk info...". After some seconds, it dissapeared, and it appeared again after a second, and so on.
The log I got from the console is this one:

"cdda://0A12F170" / index: 1
Opening track for playback: "cdda://0A12F170" / index: 2
Unable to open item for playback (Disc not available):
"cdda://0A12F170" / index: 2
Opening track for playback: "cdda://0A12F170" / index: 3
Unable to open item for playback (Disc not available):
"cdda://0A12F170" / index: 3
Opening track for playback: "cdda://0A12F170" / index: 4
Unable to open item for playback (Disc not available):
"cdda://0A12F170" / index: 4
Opening track for playback: "cdda://0A12F170" / index: 5

I can only think of some incompatibility between foobar2000 and some of the hardware and software in my PC.
Since this problem also appeared in 2 more PCs, I am suspicious about the features shared by the 3.
They are:
1. Spanish Windows XP version.
2. Some of the programs that come with LiberKey (an Italian freeware that contains several portable free applications).
3. EUPHORIA interpreter.
4. J interpreter (www.jsoftware.com).
5. AURORA (DOS legacy) text editor.
6. Vernon Buerg's List (legacy).

The remaining software is very usual (Office 2003 and so).

The hardware of the other PCs is totally different: Desktop old Compaq machines, old CD reader only, etc.

Many thanks for your help.

To be honest, I didn't expect that reaction as a result from reading the sticky note... In the future you should use foobar's own uninstallation routine, not CCleaner.

Two questions:
  • Have you tried several CDs to be sure that it is not a damaged one which causes your problem?
  • I have seen several XP systems where the access to the CD drive (not only for burning) was limited to users with administrative rights. Are you working as a restricted user or as an admin (though I don't know how foobar would behave in case of access restrictions)?

Well, CCleaner DOES use any program's uninstalation routine, the same as does the Windows Control Panel. It is faster only because displaying the list of installed programs is nearly instantaneous. The Control Panel takes a long time searching the installed programs.
1. Yes, I have tried several CDs. Moreover, any music CD is read smoothly by the Windows Media Player.
2. I have administrative rights. In fact, I installed everything that is installed in this PC.
3. In a few minutes I will try to read a MP3 CD with foobar2000 in order to get another clue to the problem. My own feeling is that all this is due to a linking problem between foobar2000 and the CD drive. But anyway it is strange that I have the same problem in other very different PCs.
Best regards.

PD:
I tried a MP3 CD. Then, as it is not an audio CD, I clicked "Add folder". foobar2000 was able to read and play any track.

Further symptoms: after using foobar2000 trying to read an audio CD, and closing it after messages as the following appeared:
******************************************
Could not access any of found CD drives.

Please shut down any other software possibly locking your CD drive.

If you're using limited account, please install Nero BurnRights (freeware) to use CD playback functionality.
******************************************************************************************
I cancelled foobar, and after that, I was unable to get access to the Samsung drive until I disconnected it and plugged it again, or I reset the PC. Even extracting the CD from the drive had no effect. Moreover, replacing the audio CD by a data or MP3 CD had no effect either.

I don't quite understand your question. Anyway, the situation is as follows, which should explain all:
I am using foobar2000 in my MSI netbook since 2009. I used it too in another PC I sold a month ago. No problems. But this is the first time I tried to read Audio disks whit foobar2000.
The other 2 PCs are old Compaq machines that were donated by someone to a Retired Persons Club (here in Uruguay, retired persons do no have much money, hein?). I am teaching them to use computers. I formated both PCs and installed on them Windows XP SP2 from scratch, and then some additional software, including foobar. I discovered foobar wound't read audio CDs while trying to do that in one of these two PCs, and then I tried that on mine with the known results. Today afternoon I'm going to check foobar2000 versions on these PCs, and if needed I'll install version 1.0.3.
Best regards.
