CDex updated to v1.70b4

I had a look at CDex page at sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/develop where I saw:

Comment: Updated Lame dll 3.97a11

Latest Latest LAME release: v3.98.2 (September 2008) is included with CDex 1.70 Beta 4.

Yet it clearly states on the "Options/Settings" tab that it uses 3.98, so which is it? I could check this out easily enough for myself, but why should it be down to the end-user to determine whether an application is being truthful or not?

I'll stick to Foobar2000 thanks.

And when, on occasion, a track you've recorded has an error (which was rare)
"You've," eh?  You're telling others how often they get errors when ripping?  I didn't know you were omniscient.

Actually, I'm saying that I, myself, very rarely had any errors recording 400+ CD's using CDex. I'm also saying that, when they did pop up, that I re-recorded the problem tracks using the program's full paranoia mode, and that it successfully corrected every error that was thrown at it. Every single time. That the experience I've had with the program. But feel free try to do the same thing with EAC, because after a month, I still wasn't done. Of course, I could've used either the fast or burst modes, but accuracy would've been kicked out of a 6-story window, as these words from the EAC page in the knowledgebase show:

"Fast extraction should run at the same speed as other grabbers, but is probably not exact anymore. Burst mode just grabs the audio data without any synchronization."

I was also reminded of how robust CDex was when I came across this link:

http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?ti...x_SecureMode_II

And that dealt with the older CDex 1.50 version, not the upgraded 1.70b2 version that I used.

What's good in entering a flame war of fanatics defending one or the other software? The point is, we have multiple choices here and everyone can select what best fits him. Tastes are, certainly, different. Although I have never used CDex, I am happy that an other piece of free software is alive and capable to give developers the necessary motivation for further work.

It's unfortunate, and disgusting, that certain people here feel the need to go after other people here because they've found out that you've used a program they don't like to get the results you want.

Just because you don't hear any errors means that there weren't any. If that's all you're concerned with then CDex is perfect for you. And so is iTunes or WMP.

But to anyone who is concerned with accuracy and the program reporting ripping errors, audible or not, you have to look elsewhere.

If you check my test, were all 4 rips accurate? Did CDex report that the rips might be different from the data on the CD?

No.

One more thing, burst mode with Accuraterip and/or test and copy is secure.

Again you completely fail to understand. You might be able to contribute meaningfully to this thread after reading about what comprises best practice. The difference between EAC and CDex is that EAC is part of best practice for ripping CDs. CDex is not. CDex is not necessarily in bad company; iTunes and Winamp also are among the rippers not in-line with best practice for secure CD ripping.

It is "unfortunate, and disgusting" that users in this thread disregard the expertise and knowledge that's been refined over the years. Instead you assume that instead of having objective reasons for saying what we do that we simply "dislike" a particular piece of software.

Rubbish. Try again.

Topic title edited, thread locked.

CDex is still not a secure ripper and cannot be recommended for producing high-quality rips.
