Logitech X-540 5.1

Hello, so i'm planning to buy an Logitech X-540 5.1

But the thing is, i don't have a sound card yet.
I was wondering if my onboard sound card that looks like this

Could it handle Logitech X-540 5.1?
Its just for a while until i could buy a decent sound card.
Also if you know of a good sound card that is good on price and performance ratio that would be awesome.

It really depends on which mainboard it is. I know that some mainboards supports remapping the mic and line-in to surround ports instead (afair).

Check your manual.
Can't wait for a HD-AAC encoder :P

Your mobo's audio device is fine only for stereo. What mobo is it? Must be pretty old, since several years ago 7.1 audio is standard in pretty much all mobos I've seen. In any case, multichannel sound cards are very cheap nowadays. I have the Xonar DX (The D1 is the same, only PCI instead of PCIe) and I like it cause of the features (Dolby Headphone specifically), and sound is good too. There are cheaper ones though.

EDIT: Odyssey above made me also remember some motherboard that remapped the inputs to center/sub and surrounds, but still it was a long time ago. If your motherboard can do that though, you're good to go.

Okay so on my motherboard manual,
I could see that it has some kind of chip for 5.1-Channels HD Audio
Here's my audio driver specs if it could provide more clarity

Well you may be lucky that it works. Try to download the latest driver from your mainboards website or realtek's own website. When installed, Realtek has a panel where you might be able to perform such remappings.

I have the latest drivers.
Is this the panel you were talking about?

Doesn't sound right. I don't think you have to set the setting in "Recording devices".

Well, it's been quite some time I saw the interface, back on Windows XP and it was a custom themed realtek-panel. Usually resides in the systray, but they probably don't look the same in Vista/7. I wish I could help you out more than this

Edit: Now that I think about it, the ports were even autodetecting if the connected device was an input or output device... Maybe you just have to try to plug something in to see if it detects it.

Please comment a bit on the sound quality when you get them  I've been looking at the set recently, but it's hard to hear the speakers from the webpages

Realtek ALC662 specifications.

This thing will support SPDIF (if it is implemented on your motherboard) but the Logitech x-540 system does not. Just something to keep in mind, but you don't need SPDIF for good sound.

However the ALC662 spec sheet says it does support 5.1 so somewhere in the control panel for your sound there should be a way to remap those other two ports from being Microphone and Line-In into being Center/LFE and Surround Left/Right. However, if you heavily use voip or voice in games, and are using the Microphone input, then you won't have anyplace to plug-in your microphone. (You could buy an inexpensive USB dedicated headset to get around this issue, or swap cables a lot.)

I also chose the Asus Xonar DX PCIe card and it is excellent for the price. But I don't use it anymore because I needed the slot for something else and I can use the on-board SPDIF to send sound out to an external 5.1 decoder/receiver using standard home speakers (of which I have too many already).. Maybe once you get 5.1 working you will be fine and won't need to buy a sound card at all.

[Edit: Hah, you guys go too fast for my fingers! I'm glad you figured it out and I hope everything sounds great when you get it!]

SPDIF is irrelevant, as you even points out yourself as the Speaker-kit does not have SPDIF input. Also that would require content to be encoded in DTS/AC3, which makes it even more complex if the set is used for gaming or music.

However, if you heavily use voip or voice in games, and are using the Microphone input, then you won't have anyplace to plug-in your microphone.

How about on the front of the case? Most cases supports this and the mainboard seems to support it. Anyway, OP didn't mention that would be a problem, which I'm sure he would, when I mentioned the port-remapping

What's on "device advanced settings"? Or, you can try clicking (or right-clicking) on the inputs/outputs themselves (the colored circles, the ones you want to modify) I seem to recall something like that worked.

What happens when you click or right-click on the pictures of the inputs/ouputs (the colored circles)? Or on that yellow folder icon near the right top corner?
