foo_midi freezes my foobar

I thought to start managing my midi files (> 1GB, outside media library), but I guess tagging isn't supported. I wanted to use file operations to properly rename the files so I can easily find what I want. Adding them to library and using custom_db is the last thing I want to do, but if it's the only way I'll try it  So if someone have suggestion please share

Another thing is that I can't access midi settings in preferences page - if I try to select "playback > input > midi..." the foobar freezes and have to manually kill the process. I checked also with portable install and after restarting windows 7, but it's the same. Here is log from procmon: logfile.csv

[edit] it looks like this has something to do with it:

Plays through either a built-in "chip tune"-like synthesizer called "Emu de MIDI," or through VST instruments installed to %programfiles%\Steinberg\VstPlugins

Remove some VST plug-ins until it starts working? I could code in a different path, but then you'd still have to copy over any VST instruments you want to use.

This VST support is great! Accelerated MIDI conversion ftw! My only problem here is that I can't configure the plugin from within Foobar2000. Do I need a VST host DSP or do I manually tweak the registry settings for each individual plugin? I want to increase polyphony and fiddle with some effects like reverb/chorus. Any help would be appreciated!

install fluidsynth, then click on soundfont input line in foo_midi preferences and choose .sf2 file

Thanks for replying. Why use a soundfont when I can use the softsynth renderer instead? In this case Yamaha XG. Its soundfont doesn't reproduce the same music as the softsynth.

It wasn't very clear to me what are you asking. There are at least 3 public DSP VST components for foobar, so use them

Tried the latest one (George Yohng's) but it doesn't support the XG VST. Been fiddling half an hour with registry monitor and it seems there's supposed to be an INI file in windows folder that the host reads from and writes to, but it's not there at all. This VST business is quite confusing. Is a polyphony value of 32 (cannot be changed via foobar2000) good enough for old game MIDIs? (which I'm trying to convert to lossy codecs to make them portable). Midi2wav Recorder has the functionality to record from MIDI-OUT but it's done in real-time with risks of clipping, therefore it's not very efficient. dBPoweramp supports MIDI conversion using Directmusic only, something which Yamaha's WDM driver doesn't support. I really like how MIDI sounds using XG's default instruments.

I don't know what XG VST is, but maybe you should run the VST through some host (like Acon EffectChainer) and not directly with DSP VST component

If you are using waveform seekbar or Crossfade DSP, which will decode tracks in advance, then you can experience fb2k freeze with MIDI files.

I just need the VST to render MIDI for me, I don't apply any other effects when I rip music.
