foobar setup on 7.1 surround system

Anybody tried to setup foobar for 7.1 sound system?

My problem is the following: I have Audigy 2 ZS sound card and 7.1 speakers setup, and I would like to be able to play all my audio files (not only mp3, but also multichannel flacs, AC3 and DTS) with foobar. The problem with 5.1 content is that the rear channels are mapped by default to the rear and NOT to the side speakers, which leaves very unpleasant feeling like the sound is coming only just behind you. I think a normal way to play multichannel music would be to map the rear channels in 5.1 to the sides and eventually to use the rear speakers with Dolby Prologic or DTS:Neo (if you want this). PowerDVD works that way and also with the console of my sound card I can choose how the speakers to be mapped in case I use the internal AC3/DTS decoder.

So, basically, my question is: is there a way to make the rear channels of multichannel 5.1 music to sound through side speakers instead through the rears.

Many thanks in advance.

Try foo_channel_mixer - I have a 7.1 system, but needed to do the reverse of what you describe - the audio driver for my card defaults to sending stereo audio to all of the speakers so I needed to turn stereo audio into fake 7.1 with silence on all the surround channels.  It is a very flexible plugin and may be able to do what you need to do too.

Unfortunately, the channel mixer supports only 6 channels, so I can't make mapping of  the rear channels to the side speakers.
