How Do I Get FLAC Files To Play In WMP 11?

Hi.....I was on the FLAC Frontend website, and under their FAQ, there was a link to instruct you how to play FLAC files in Windows Media Player.  I clicked on the link, and the page cannot be found.  I have WMP 11, and am running Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit.  Can someone tell me the best way to do it?  Thanks.

Welcome to HA forum! From your post I can conclude that you have the basic knowledge of internet. So I can assume that you know Google. Please try to search phrase "flac on vista wmp11" and study results.
Good luck!

Indeed Google is usually your friend for basic questions like this.

Too bad the majority of Google searches will lead you to install CoreFLAC or Illiminable Direct Show filters.  Neither work properly.

The correct filter to install is madflac, available here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/madFLAC.htm and other places, or the DC-Bass source filter from dsp-worx.

Edit:  64 bit may be a problem.  My suggestions may only work for 32 bit.

Seconding madFLAC.  I think you can dodge the 64-bit problem by running the 32-bit version of WMP - doesn't this have to be done with a lot of third-party DirectShow filters anyway?

Don't know how good it is (I'm a foobarer).

I downloaded MADFlac from free-codecs.com. The latest version of AVAST antivirus detected a virus in it!! Can anyone please confirm whether this is indeed the case? If so, is there another location from where I can download a clean copy?

Thanks.

Avira Antivir also says there's a virus in the madFlac installer.  I contacted the author and he says there is no virus.  The installer sat on my hard drive for months before Avira decided it was a virus.  The file never changed, the A-V definition did.  There's no virus with madFlac.ax already registered, so I'm ok according to Antivir, but I don't know what to tell anyone who wants to install it now.  Ignore the warning?  Don't know.

Anyone try the new Illiminable version?  Any problems?

For anyone concerned about madFlac and viruses, as of 12/15/08, Avira Antivir has decided it was a false positive.  There is no virus in the madFlac installer, and never was.

Based on my limited testing, the new Illiminable at http://www.xiph.org/dshow/ FLAC also works in Windows Media Player.  I could not get DC Bass Source to work but didn't spend much time trying.
