Distortion After Burning

Hello All:

I have been ripping audio cd's for a few weeks now using the latest EAC version and have burned a few of these rips using Nero 8 Ultra Edition.

I have listened to a few of those disks on my home system and all seemed to be well.  But when I put one of them in the other day for the first time and a different one today, also for the first time listening, I noticed that on the very high notes of a few songs I heard extreme distortion (example Pavarotti).  Now this is what I did to attempt to track down what could be the problem:

1.  I listened to those ripped tracks on my computer and there was no distortion at all at those points in question, i.e. the very high notes;
2.  I placed those songs on my ipod and also no distortion with those particular tracks;
3.  And, as I said above, when I listened to those tracks on my home stereo, I got extreme distortion at the high points;
4.  I also played those cd's on my dvd player of my entertainment unit and those points were distorted also.
5.  And lastly, I put the disk in question back into my computer to listen to those high points in question and the distortion was clearly there.

To let you know, I rip with EAC compressed to FLAC; then I use the FLAC frontend to decode to WAV and then I burn with Nero.  I decode to WAV so that I can burn to a format that is compatible with my home CD player.

I just want to find out from any forum members if they have run into this problem before with either EAC or Nero and if not, have you heard of anyone who has run into this problem before and discovered why the distortion on high notes.

Thanks for your ideas in advance,

Comet

Could you rip the burned CD and compare the two waveforms in Audacity?

It is very strange unless EAC or Nero are told to play with the file, by ticking the "normalize" option, for example. Otherwise I find it almost impossible...

Comparing the WAV files is a good idea.

Hello Keykey:

So, you think it could be the normalize option that if checked could give me this problem?  Can you tell me how you think that this could be the case?

Also, when compiling a list of songs from different discs, how does one equalize the audio without choosing the normalize option?

Thanks, and thanks to Axon as well

p.s.  I just chose those problem tracks and set them into another burning software and they came out distortion free when I took the burned disk and placed it into my stereo system.

So you use "normalize"??
It seems it is Nero causing "the problem"??

As long as you use WAV files to burn, why don't you try burning them with EAC instead? Tools --> Write CD-R.
Use a cuesheet or Layout to add files.

I guess "normalization" could cause those "artifacts" not present in the original rip.

Good luck and cheers.

Hello All:

I found out that Nero was the culprit in my experiencing distortion in some tracks with very high notes when I would burn to an audio disc.  This would happen because I chose to check "normalize", and it doesn't look like there is anything that I can do with Nero to help eliminate this problem unless I choose not to "normalize" the burn.  But, that is the feature that I'm wanting.

Could someone tell me of a burn programme - freeware- that I could use that has an "equalizing" feature, for lack of  a better term, (like Nero's "normalizing" burn option) that when I'm compiling a list from different albums/artists to burn to a single disc it will equalize them?

I know that there are probably several but if someone with experience in wanting the same option as I and discovering it could help out that would be great.

Thank you,

Comet

Burns e.g. FLACs to audio CDs.. AND you can use ReplayGain tags to "normalize" tracks from different albums (options: track or album). I've tried it and it works ok.
