Nero 8 Audio CD Compilation Bugs

I've been using Nero 8 for about 6 months now and I've noticed two major bugs in Audio CD Compilation.

The first bug relates to setting a 0:00 second pause between songs. I set all the pauses (except the first track) to 0:00 and then burn a CD. As soon as I hit burn, all the pauses default back to 0:02, unless I save the compilation first. This never happened in Nero 5. Even with a saved compilation, if I double-click on a track or make any changes to a track, that track will default back to 2 seconds. Sometimes I won't notice this until after the CD is burned. Oops - another coaster! Basically you have keep checking the track pauses before you burn because it seems that any action you take while the compilation window is open can cause the track pauses to default back to 2 seconds. So, now I just save the compilation, open it again, don't touch anything, and then burn. It's the only safe way to do it.

The second bug is downright ridiculous. You can't tell me that it's supposed to be like this! Apparently not every action in the Audio CD compilation window warrants a "save" prompt. If I change the track title, artist or pause, it will ask me if I want to save when I close the window, but if I move the tracks around, it won't ask me to save!

Sometimes, I wish I still had Nero 5...

Nero 6.6 is known to work well. Just because the company went downhill with bloat does not suddenly make these old versions bad.

I gave up on NERO products.
I moved on to CDBurnerXP for Data CD/DVD burning and Burrrn for Audio CD on Windows. There are even better applications under Linux: K3B, Brasero, GnomeBaker.

I haven't repented from switching NERO to CDBurnerXP.

Same here

Are you using latest Nero version (8.3.2.1)? I just tested it and everything seems to work fine. Burned audio CD has 0 pause between songs (tested with EAC) and 0 pause is remembered in compilation window of Nero Burning ROM.

Reordering of tracks indeed doesn't invoke save dialog on close. I will report this to appropriate persons. Are there any other changes that don't invoke save dialog on close?

I'm using 8.0.3.0. Is the latest version just an upgrade or do you have to install a whole new version? I really don't want to install the whole thing all over again. I have my settings just the way I like them and I have no desire to start all over from scratch. I think the pause thing is just a bug with this version because there's no reason it should keep defaulting to the 2 second pause.

Yes, there is another bug similar to this problem that I discovered while making a CD-ROM data compilation.
Sometimes when I make a data compilation, I will save it to burn at a later time. In past versions, if in the meantime, I renamed or moved one of the files or folders that was in this saved compilation, it would warn me when I opened the compilation again, saying that there were missing files or folders, and there would be a red "x" in place of the missing file. Now it doesn't say anything, so it's possible to end up burning a CD-ROM that has a whole bunch of missing files! The only way to make sure that all the files are still there is to open up each folder (in the CD-ROM compilation window) and make sure that there isn't an "x" in place of the file.

It's possible that all of these bugs have been taken care of with the latest version, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle to upgrade if it means installing the whole program again.

Version 8.3.2.1 is just an upgrade.
Unfortunately it also doesn't display warning about missing files

So I just launch it and it will install right OVER my version 8.0.3.0? Will it save all my current settings also?

Yes, it should save all your current settings.

Hey Muaddib,
Thanks for your replies to this thread. I also had some troubles with Nero CD burning, but this thread has helped. Its great to see software providers giving out such support and service.
Thanks

I've been hesitant to upgrade past 8.0.3.0, which I currently am using, and after reading this info I found online, I don't think I'll be upgrading at all. Is there any truth to this? If so, this is TOTALLY unacceptable (especially the bugs listed in bold)!

Version history:
Nero Burning ROM 8.3.6.0
Changes/Bugfixes

* Nero Burning ROM could not encode AC-3 audio files into another output format.

Nero Burning ROM 8.2.8.0
New Features

* Implemented support for DualLayer DVD-RW media including layer jump junction

Changes/Bugfixes

* In Windows Vista®, the Windows Aero design switched to the normal Windows design (Windows Standard), no matter which Nero application had been started.
* When burning an Audio CD, the pause feature did not work as expected The "crossfading tracks" feature did not work properly either as a result of this.* The ImageRecorder was not recognized as target when Nero CMD was used with a parameter file. An error message was displayed: "Drive ‘ ‘ not found, available are" followed by the recorders' list.

Nero Burning ROM 8.1.1.4

Changes/Bugfixes
Audible files could only be burned with Nero Express and not with Nero Burning ROM.
Selecting Nero Burning ROM resulted in the error message:
"Nero Burning ROM could not be started. Your serial number does not allow the start of this application. Upgrade now."
When creating an Audio CD, Nero Burning ROM encountered problems when adding an ISRC code to an audio file.

You probably have those bugs in version that you have installed (8.0.3.0) and if you upgrade to version 8.3.6.0 you will have those bugs fixed.

No, my version (8.0.3.0) works fine. Those bugs are in the upgraded version. That's why I'm afraid to install it. I don't want to lose my CD audio compilation capabilities. Nero Burning ROM is the only program I use in Nero 8 Ultra, so if I upgrade and encounter those bugs it will be worthless to me.

It looks like your english is not good enough, and your common sense can't match up.

If i read "change" and read something that says "it did". I am confident it means "Now, it does not".
If i read "bugfixes", i can discern between the word "bug", and the word "fix", which means that something that was having an undesired action/effect, now no longer does.

Sometimes bugs are evident, other times, bugs appear on specific configurations, and/or settings. Claiming that those work for you doesn't mean that the bug doesn't exist for you.
Most of the times, a coder does not implement bugs, and does not forget to test if what he has coded actually works. What happens is that code continually changes and tests don't check for every possible variation. It is at that point that one gets a message from an user asking for a fix to a problem he's found.

If you think my post was unasked for, think if your post deserved credibility.

You probably don't understand what a changelog is, it is a LIST OF FIXED BUGS, not a list of new bugs.

Audible files. Meaning audio books from Audible.
As it is written further in the changelog there was problem of starting NBR from Audible Manager, actually audio books worked also with NBR.

See post below. So I didn't know what a changelog was - now I do. Thanks! The tone of your post was still totally uncalled for. As far as dealing with the English language, that's what I do for a living, so that comment is completely ridiculous. Excuse me for not being familiar with certain software terminilogy. I came here looking for help, not insults!

My opinion is that you should not change to another version unless there is a compelling reason to. The new version will definitely behave differently. Not all of those differences may be described as bugs though.

I intentionally didn't use the word "upgrade", because a new release is not necessarily better.

Give him a break about Audible. Not everybody knows these commercial distributors.

I'll go along with that. Other than those few bugs that I listed in my original post, my version of Nero is basically doing what it's supposed to do. I asked about the upgrade because all of the Nero tech support people I've spoken to have told me that the upgrade will fix those problems, and then I found all that negative info online.

You're absolutely right - I apologize. I was under the impression that those were problems associated with those particular versions of Nero 8, not the fixes!

The inability to launch Nero Burning Rom (the main application) definitely appeared at some point after v6.6 and didn't exist since the beginning.

I recall that the author of Nero Lite began to have some problems with saving the serial number and decided to discontinue his project. Also there were restricted OEM releases which didn't include the main application. I tried to install Nero Drive Speed, only one exe to make a CDROM run slower, and it refused to load 50% of cases with a spectacular message about unlicensed usage (I had six red boxes of purchased Nero on shelf).

From that I conclude that the issue with Audible Manager not launching NBR is but one way how the new intentionally implemented usage restrictions could manifest. Maybe the program now launches from Audible, but you can expect it not working in your environment.

Nero 6.6 on the other hand can be copied around without "installation", all what is required are 2 values in the registry and nerocd95.vxd on Win98 systems. The old Nero can decode all free audio formats, including MP4 and ADTS AAC. Now that the encoder is free there is no reason to use Nero 7 or 8.

Allright. Apologies, but it still seemed strange that you got so confused (and in some way refusing to accept the new versions) due to a thing that should have been self-describing.

Can you downgrade to Nero 6 or 7 and use your serial number for Nero 8? I know that there are old versions available on the net but I wasn't sure what was involved as far as using them legitimately.

Also, was DVD writing available in Nero 6 or only Nero 7?

Nero has given me so much grief since I had to abandon Version 5 that I guess I was EXPECTING more problems than fixes! Sorry for the tone of my reply. I've had a long week!

Since my current Version 8 is working fine (I can work around those problems I mentioned in my first post and they have no effect on the quality of my CD/DVD burns) so I might as well stick with it. If I install another version, I would just have to get used to whatever strange idiosyncracies are found in THAT version - probably no better, no worse!

DVD burning was available since some v5.x.

I see that Nero 8 serials are longer and are not accepted by 6.

Part of me is curious to see if the latest version of 8 actually does address my original issues (as the phone tech support person claimed). Muaddib says that I can just install right over my current version and it will save all my settings.

Sorry if I'm asking something that you've already answered, but do you have any personal experience with the more recent versions of Nero 8 - any opinions?
