Which do you think is better, with or without SBR?

Without. SBR is intended for low bitrates, at which high frequencies cannot be stored without considerable quality loss, and is used to reconstruct them from lower frequencies that are stored.

Why any application developer would include a setting using HE-AAC (=aacPlus, =AAC+SBR) at such a high bitrate is beyond me.

Thanks, I was wrong to have thought LC's profile  :LC  HE's profile  :HE

It seems I still have lots to learn

I would also recommend that you use some ripper other than Easy CD-DA Extractor. EAC and dbPoweramp are two good ones.

Thanks

Using itunes 10 now

I guess "iTunes Plus" is a good choice

iTunes does have optional (probably relatively rudimentary) error correction. Unless your CDs are in bad condition, you shouldn't have to worry about more than the very occasional tiny error, which I would argue don't matter much if you're already ripping to a lossy format. For lossless formats of course you would be concerned.

And iTunes Plus is 256 kbps LC VBR (of some sort); find the topic "iTunes Plus preset reverse engineered" for more information.
