Sound card - S/PDIF - 2.0 Studio monitor ?

I just set up this system and testing the settings of sound card.
When playing musics, I noticed that features like Dolby Virtual Speakers do not seem to change the sound at all.
Is this because I connected them with a digital cable?
Maybe signal is bypassing sound card?
I thought bypass only works when you watch DVD with digital speakers which has built-in decoder.
Could anyone enlighten me about this issue?
