So what exactly am I suppose to hear differently?

It's often suggested that it's easier to ABX lossy when you're using not-so-good equipment.  What's interesting to note is that the people who are saying this are usually the ones who are able to ABX things that most people can't.

There are quite a few people that claim good equipment makes the difference  but very few (if any) that are able to demonstrate such a difference with valid ABX tests.

Would it be possible to set up a meta-ABX, in which a group of testers discovered first what they could ABX with fairly modest equipment, and then try with top end stuff. There might be a result that showed that a tester could, say, ABX V5 from lossless with one set of equipment, V4 with the other.

If this were possible, it might help with what seems to be a fairly frequent topic.

Couldn't help myself, alas -- cloth ears.
