I've ripped audio using an external SCSI CD-ROM, so it's certainly possible.  Perhaps CDex is having trouble recognizing the USB 2.0 interface?

I finally got EAC to work on my external FireWire by dropping the Nero ASPI into the EAC folder.  Are ASPI issues a possible explanation here?
