how did you test and verify that kmixer does not alter the bits? What OS/sound card did you use for this test? You seem to be pretty alone with that finding!

Since someone mentioned external DACs here. There is a very nice combo of external DAC and headphone amplifier from Benchmark Media. It also has the benefit of being almost completetly resistent jitter from the sound card digital output and comes with an analog volume control.
