EAC and freedb issue

I'm in the process of copying CD's to flac on my hard drive and did about 15 CD's before running into an issue with freedb.  For some reason I started getting "Error - not able to resolve host name" messages when EAC does an initial scan of a CD to gets it's information.  The program was running great until yesterday.  Does anyone know how to fix the problem?  Is the Freedb database no longer functioning?

Thanks!

I had a brief problem the other day as well.

It has been offline for brief periods in the past.

Hey, its got "free" right in its name,y'know

Probably a server fault........

Here is a workaround, using Gracenote CDDB with EAC.

First, download & install the freeware, Player.

Perform the CDDB lookup with Player and export the info as "cdplayer.ini."

Then import it into EAC (database=>get CD information from=>cdplayer.ini.)

Just to give you a confirming sanity check, I too have just started seeing problems with EAC and freedb starting this evening.

I am unable to submit the results of CDs whose metadata I have changed back to freedb.  EAC puts up a progress dialog that eventually fails with the message "Error, No response".

Its funny, because if you goto www.freedb.org, the website seems active.

Is it just the cgi that accepts data uploads that is out of action?

Glad to hear I'm not going crazy.  The database was working last night and then stopped working after I had ripped a few CD's.  I was also on freedb's site a few days ago and and even posted to their forum, but never got a response.  In the meantime I've been using the workaround suggested by odiuous_m and this gets most of the info (except year, genre).

Unfortunately I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer your question about the cgi malfunctioning.

You can press F12 to get to the Freedb options and select from a bunch of servers. Whenever I get errors with one server, I just try the others until one works.

For what its worth, FreeDB has suffered massive issues since moving from its old home ; our server monitors find it down at least once every other day and we monitor it every 30 minutes.

Most of the old mirrors are not reliable or even still up - no fault of the mirror holders, just some crazy fredb decisions.

It is worth trying tracktype.org as an alternative and also the MusicBrainz freeDB mirror by using mb.inhouse.co.uk

Just my luck I spoke too soon.  For some reason when I go to import the cdplayer.ini file with EAC I'm no longer getting an update of the tag infrormation.  I know that Gracenote is exporting the data correctly to the file, so I apparently have some issue of EAC importing it.  This doesn't make sense to me because this method was working perfectly and then it just stopped.  It looks like I need another workaround for this workaround

Any other suggestions?

Also, I have to agree with Ripfactory.  I only have one option for a mirror site for freedb - no other sites register.

For anyone interested in tagging concerns I have proposed a tagging scheme/tool that I believe would greatly advance the way tagging is done. My original proposal was to spoon / dBpoweramp , with a lukewarm reception. I have also proposed it to Andre/EAC, mediamonkey, mp3tag, and helium. You can read more here at the original proposal:

I am hoping that one (or all) of them pick up the idea.

Eli

I'd be interested in taking this up further with you - since we license every source you mention and have implemented them all.

PM me if interested in a follow through.

From what I've read, there is a problem if the cdplayer.ini file gets too large.

So, just delete it and create a new one the next time you export info from Player.

BTW, cdplayer.ini is located in the Windows folder.

Quote
64 Kilobyte Limit on Track Information in CDPLAYER.INI[/size]

You can record volume and track data and CDPlayer stores this information in its CDPLAYER.INI file. However, like all INI files, CDPLAYER.INI has a 64 kilobytes limit. Normally, this is not a limitation for INI files, since few programs need 64 kilobytes of application settings and switches.

It can however become a problem when the INI file is used as a poor man's database and this is exactly what CDPlayer does. CDPlayer stores several hunderd bytes of information about each CD, where the exact length depends on the length of the track names used.

There is no workaround for this limitation. If you have an extensive CD collection CDPlayer almost surely will run out of space in its INI file. Microsoft Access has a sample database for audio CD's without size restrictions, but of course it cannot play the CD in the CDROM drive.

Its in progress right now and has morphed a little.

The issue witht he standalone tagger is that at its initial release it will only tag files ripped in our own ripper - why? because only then can we be sure of a valid ToC embedded in the frame of each file and hence a sure fire lookup mechanism.  Other rippers don't have this (as far as we know, happy to have feedback) so we are reverse calculating a ToC for those but this cannot be considered as accurate a reference.

Ripper part is almost there with a little more fizzy approach to the 'good' data and a variant on your weighting model.

I expect a pre beta August 3rd.

If you have anything to add meantime, thoughts most welcome.

Thank you for the update.

I know WMP can store the CD TOC, as well as dBpowerAMP. I have requested from both the FLAC and TAK developers to support TOC storage in their files.
