Easy alternative to Cubase

Hi,
I've recently had problems putting Cubase SX 3 onto my new vista laptop, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on similar alternatives. I'd like something as close as possible to it, with the option of handling VSTs and audio effects, and preferably affordable. I would buy SX 4, though it costs a bomb, and much more than is decent for the many small projects I do. I've experimented around with acid in the last few days, but even though I once used it as a preference, it suddenly seems a lot harder to navigate and way less powerful. Any suggestions are appreciated.
If at first you don't succeed, so much for hang-gliding

Try Rearper:

Very impressive, tiny tool. You my find that you cannot justify paying for cubase after reaper...

WOW: that's an amazing prog: especially so for free. A few very minor complaints, but for what it's worth, nothing comes close. Very stable, and does everything I can think I might need.
