Problems with EAC ...

Been reading the boards for a few weeks now and finally decided to join up.

I also signed up to get some info on whats causing EAC to freeze up and on a few occasions, restart my computer.

I'm using EAC V0.9 Beta 4 w/ LAME 3.90.2 on a system consisting of:
-Epox 8KHA+
-Athlon1600+
-256 DDR PC2100
-Lite-On 16102B Burner ( Connected to a ATA/100 card with a Samsung DVD on the same IDE cable. Samsung is Master/Lite-On is Slave )

I started using EAC about a month ago and after setting everything up, I ripped about 20 CDs and was enjoying the great sound output from the --alt-preset standard setting but just a few days ago, I wanted to rip a few new CDs and EAC would rip about 4-5 songs before freezing. I'd click on the program to try to cancel but the program would show the " Program Not Responding " message on the top and I'd have to CTRL+ALT+DEL the program to shut it off. It would disappear from my desktop, but the program would still be running in the task manager. After a bit it would cause my computer to randomly reboot.

I tried using 2 earlier versions of EAC as suggested on the EAC page but it happens with any version I try.

I tried putting the Lite-On drive as the only drive on the IDE cable but still the same thing.

I haven't changed any hardware and haven't messed with any of the settings from when it was working so I'm stumped at this point.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention,

I've also tried ripping on the Samsung DVD drive so this is why I'm speculating its something with the program or maybe another program on my system that might conflict with it?

1. EAC (in general) will not work properly with CD/DVD drives that are connected to PCI IDE controllers, so connect your CD/DVD drives to your MoBo's IDE controller and see if the problem persists ...
2. EAC is very picky about your installed ASPI layer, so check that out as well
3. See if there are any programs in the background that utilize ASPI access (like some UDF writer ...)
4. Check your RAM for errors ...

5. Does your DVD hang at the same point where your LiteOn hangs ?
6. Is this problem reproducible with multiple CD's or ist it a single CD problem ? (... could be copy protection or bad mastering)

Be sure to visit the official EAC board at www.digital-inn.de ... Regging is in german but the board itself is in english ...
The name was Plex The Ripper, not Jack The Ripper

mtkversion:

Did EAC encounter any read or sync errors before crashing? With my (crappy) CD writer, it sometimes looks as if it stalls my system when the error correction kicks in and when it performs gap detection (Windows does actually report it as "not responding" during that period), but at some point it will pick up again.

Volcano,

I'd try running it off the IDE cables that my hard drive is on, but due to the layout of my case and drives, they won't reach.

I'm running XP Pro and installed an ASPI layer from Adaptec I believe, can I run EAC off the " Native Installed " option?

Checked the RAM and it reports no errors.

The DVD will do the same thing right around the same area ( 4-6 songs will rip, but trying it out just now again, it only ripped 2 songs then " froze "

I've tried 3 different CDs that on my previous attempts to burn, burned fine. I'm re-ripping them as I didn't have a setting correct and I'm trying to get access to the UberNode run by Chris Myden.

Thanks for your tips too ...

Jean Luc,  I haven't been patient enough to wait to see if it reports any errors,  I'll try it one more time and just let it run through and see what it reports, thanks.

I uninstalled/reinstalled and reconfigured all the settings on EAC and my drives.

I turned off most of the manually run programs through Task Manager, and am using the Native Installed ASPI layer and EAC seems to work fine now.

I'll slowly start restarting the programs I normally run and see if one of them conflicts with EAC.

But do you guys recommend I leave the computer alone completely when I use EAC or is it ok to do moderate activities like surfing, chatting etc?

After a bit of testing, I've narrowed the problem down.

The program freezes when I have NO C2 as a used setting when ripping.

With C2 enabled, songs burn fine but to get access to the UberNode/Scoobyserve Hubs you can't use C2.

So now I'm wondering what I should do to get the program to stop freezing when using Secure Mode with NO C2?

I updated my ASPI Layer to the Adaptec 4.72.1 files and am still using the Lite-On drive.

I tested out a few cds on my old Hewlett Packard computer with a 4x LG drive and it rips the songs perfectly and quickly. ( 4-5x ) but the Lite-On is at the fastest only at around 2x.

Any ideas?

I am far from a specialist on ASPI matters, but here's what comes in my mind about it:

No. If you do install an external ASPI layer, you should check 'external ASPI layer' instead of 'native ASPI'

About your ASPI update: I am not sure it is a good idea to always have the latest ASPI version. Does anyone know what version is the latest stable one? 4.60 is OK, but that one is old. Some of the 4.7x versions must be OK by now. (they haven't always been  )

...which isn't a reason not to use it. It works fine here. (ASPI 4.70 messed up my system, I won't ever touch any of that post-4.60 crap again.)

True. On my fresh install of Win98 as soon as I installed 4.71.2 Win98 immediately upon reboot gave me a version conflict warning dialog box (the first time I've ever encountered such an error) which was a royal pain to get rid of.

I'd say if using EAC just download VOB's ASAPI (good luck finding it the url http://www.vobsupport.de/Update/ASAPI.exe doesn't work anymore). I've never experienced any problems using ASAPI.

Funny, the URL worked fine for me.
