MP3 to MIDI Converter

Hello all!

Is there any free software that can convert an MP3 file to a MIDI file?

If so, where can I find it?

Thank you in advance!

Hi mjpartyboy, just about any audio converter software can convert mp3 to wav. Then use amazingmidi to convert the wav to midi.

I tried that and the final output was a strange piano track.

AmazingMIDI automatically transcribes music, converting WAV files into MIDI files. It can recognize single-instrument polyphonic music. It's a powerful tool to help you to transcribe music, to practice musical instruments and to make MIDI files, and so on.

The quality of music recognition depends on the tone color of the music. AmazingMIDI is suitable for analyzing the precise-frequency attenuating sounds like piano or guitar. The drum sound becomes only noise.

I've seen only (free & commercial) software to recognize monophonic or monotimbral sounds at best.

A "mp3 to midi converter" is something very futuristic ^^''

If I remember correctly even Steinberg (the authors of Cubase) gave up.

Asking for such a thing is like asking to write sentences with only numbers. You can't get the whole thing done.

If you're not happy with the conversion, you should try to understand what MIDI is.

Maybe it would help to know why do you want a midi file.

The only method giving good results is:
listen to the music very carefully and write it down with some notation software.

My guess: he wants it for a ring tone

A midi file is played back by a synthesizer, either the one found on your soundcard or a software-based one, while MP3 is entirely digital. Some piece of translation software, like the one you asked for, would have to correctly guess every single note, the instruments playing the whole score back, the reverb, the pitch, and so on... Seriously, even if that worked, then you still wouldn't get a piece of music that sounded identical to the MP3 file, due to the quality heavily depending on the synthesizer's abilities. Try playing back MIDI once with the soundcard's synthi, then with Microsoft's GS Wavetable SW one, which is shipped with DirectX (only if you're a Windows user, of course). It'll be a surprise how completely different they'll sound. You can switch between the synthesizers installed on your system via System Control --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Audio.
