could you please tell me why wouldn't you install a codec pack?

mpui - does it play real audio and real video?

MusicLover, because there is a good chance that only one broken codec will render your system unstable (search virtualdub.org, there is good article about it somewhere). (mpui will play some real video and audio, but not all types)

Codec packs are by their very nature - evil.  Get ffdshow and use MPC.

what is MPC?

I. myself, have used K-Lite for ages and have experinced absolutely no problems with it. A very experinced programmer has told me that he does the same and that it is unsafe to install several codec packs on 1 PC, and safe to install 1. But, I'd better be on the safe side and use mpui + ffdshow...

BTW, mpui itself will alow to watch movies, but if a video is in a game, for example, I think it won't play it without codecs installed.

Most games dont need additional codecs though (I know Mafia does but only cause that codec was removed from XP compared to older operating systems). Hell if the game was packaged correctly it will install the codec anyway.

mplayer (mpui) doesnt require ffdshow to playback files. Its like winamp\foobar, it has its own folder for codecs which it uses to playback files. If you want to give other directshow basied applications the ability to read additional formats then ffdshow will do that. Like WMP or explorer.
I tend to use one or the other.

MPC = Media player classic, uses directshow codecs. Fairly good but I didnt like the fact I had to install codecs to get it to work, and that means WMP is able to play the same files MPC does and I hate having 2 programs installed that do the same thing.
mplayer is for minimilists.

I been running different codec packs and always had problems where one type of video file would play and audio woudlnt pick up and then audio would work and subtitles on anime wouldnt pick up...

I always had to reset one codec and configure antoher to get it working until the next reboot.

Finally i did find K-Lite... note i do not want to or will ever use players like vlc mostly because my pc is connected to my home theatre monitor and those players have limited customization or if they do customize in one way they dont in another...

Long story short i found k-lite standard also does broken codec fix which i had few enteries for when i installed it.  Though authors programming errors in deploying the codec may still be there.  Even so i found k-lite (standard package so far i have tested) to be my codec of choice.

I personally use the Combined Community Codec Pack at http://www.cccp-project.net and uncheck the zoom player. Is there a particular reason why I shouldn't use that one or why another one would be better? I'm a big fan of being able to do as much as possible with a small file size.

I've found MPUI really great, it does not need any codecs! BUT - it does not play video on my TV

codec for vista ultimate 64 bit? I hear Microsoft has something already available that will be a part of their SP1 for vista. Anyone hear or have experience with this new codec pack?

Sorry, my mistake: MPUI does play video on my TV! There is also VLC player, it seems more popular, not sure if its better. Does anybody know if they are still working on MPUI?

mpui is much newer than vlc, that should explain popularity, however VLC does cover much broader possible usage in some areas and it is multiplatformic as a gui.

The new guy in town would be smplayer, based on mplayer as well as mpui:

well, I've come to the conclusion that the best variant of all is http://mpui.sourceforge.net/ it does not need installation, and is not worse than the others plus it is smaller...

Use either ffdshow (if you have nothing but avi files) which supports nearly everything inside an avi, or cccp (combined community codecs pack), which gets you ffdshow + a lot of splitters (ogm, matroska, etc).

If you have a lot of mkv files, use Haali media splitter, and if you have many avc files (x264/h264 and similar "nextgen" formats"), use CoreAVC. I'm not entirely positive if these last two are included in cccp or not and I'm too damned lazy to look up.

Or you can try Mplayer, it plays -everything- and does not rely on Directshow codecs.

I had not heard of MPUI before reading this thread (I've used mplayer on linux but I had no idea there was a gui version on windows), it's really a wonderful program, much simpler than VLC yet very versatile. I downloaded the last stable version from http://mpui.sourceforge.net/ and I've only had some problems with subtitle timings on matroska files.

Now i can get rid of ffdshow, though I will miss MPC.
