Convert AVI to VCD

What could I use (free) to convert these AVI files to VCD?

I want to convert 2 AVI (I believe created by DivX) files into VCD files: son wants to watch movie through TV instead of on the PC. My DVD player also does VCD. -I don't have a DVD burner. The AVI files are 700MB/ea, 1.3GB uncompressed; 2 avi files make the 100 min movie.

I used Allok AVI to DVD/VCD/MPEG, but in the trial version it only converts half of each AVI.  Used Nero 6 then to copy to CDR. It does play well through the DVD player! But not worth the $25 for this one old cartoon.

Nero (ulta 6) says my avi file format not supported whe  attempting to open from within the VCD section

Interesting solutions -most are limited trials. Found one that appears full function:decompresses, then converts in 2 steps. Decompression was quick enough, but the conversion rate is 30hrs for each 50min avi (1.1GHz) -before I would even know if it works. So I aborted that one.

Downloaded TMPEG shareware but doesn't support my avi file (compressed or uncompressed)

sharewareguide.net
Even on this site: all the freeware either converts only a portion of each AVI, or places a huge "watermark" across the screen (large white block letters).

I have downloaded/installed the Nero.Mega.Plugin.Pack
Tried to open the 700MB AVI file withing the VCD section. Nero still does not recognize the format.

I download VDUB and try to open my 700MB file.
error: "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media player, are not suitable."

I'm starting to get the idea that full function shareware is not available for AVI files created with DivX
