CD-RW drives supporting LightScribe

First of all, perhaps you should mention exactly why you want a CD-RW drive specifically that supports LightScribe as opposed to a DVD-RW drive.  Is it cost?  My guess is that CD or DVD compatibility has less to do with the cost than LightScribe compatibility.  LightScribe media generally costs more than traditional media.  With graphics and text, it can take up to 36 minutes to burn a label in the 'best' quality setting!  And lastly, the labels are sensitive to light and fingerprints.  I hope I didn't just rain on your parade...

I suppose any DVD drive with lightscribe will also support CD Lightscribe media.  Thing is, you'll have to find that media.

Perhaps I misinterpreted the question.  If so, I'll just say that a DVD-RW drive that supports LightScribe does indeed burn labels onto both CD and DVD media.  You can purchase blank CDs and DVDs that carry the LightScribe brand name...

I am looking for a CD-RW drive because I already ordered a NEC DVD writer (in favor of LG) that supports LabelFlash. However, since I am going to use my current LITE-ON CD-RW drive in a new PC that currently uses a Mitsumi CR-4802TE (which still works after six years of massive usage!) and because I don't want to stress the DVD unit with burning CDs, I though I might get a new CD-RW device.

Edit: BTW, someone from CDFreaks told me that there aren't any CD-RW units because of the licensing costs of LightScribe. A CD-RW with LightScribe would cost as much as a low-budget DVD rewriter.

Well, I might get a Benq DW1655 since it supports LS and its CD reading capabilities are awesome according to the latest CDRInfo review. I hope my local Saturn store is going to have it soon since I have 30 € left on my gift card.

No offense, but I found your statements very interesting. First you state that you have a CD burner that works fine after years of "massive usage". Then you immediately follow it with a statement implying CD burning will damage your DVD burner.

It has nothing to do with "damage". Rewritable drives have absolutely pitiful failure rates. It makes a great deal of sense to do the most "generic" type of burn (CD-R) on the cheapest drive, and save the expensive drive for the good stuff (DVD).

Is there any high quality media (eg Taiyo Yuden) that supports lightscribe?

I am left with only one DVD writer after taking out my LITE-ON. The Mitsumi I mentioned is a 4x CD-R and 2x CD-RW writer - reading is done at 8x. Even though it still works, I barely find media that is designed for such low speeds.

OT: how much is LightScribe media?  I saw those drives and it seems like a nice feature, but does any decent software support LS?  Seems like a wait and see technology to me.  I will stick with Mr. Sharpie

Most stores sell 10 Verbatim CD-Rs for 5 € here in Germany. Nero offers an official LS plugin for free AFAIK - what I am waiting for is a plugin for Label Flash.
