Nero 7 released!

Anyone know if it has an AAC++ encoder?  Yeah, I could install the trial but I feel lazy.

I wonder if those of us who have Nero 6.6 Ultra Edition would be entitled to a free upgrade.

does anybody know whether there's gonna be (or if there ever was) a difference betwen the free and the premiun version? only regarding the quality of the cd/dvd burnt with it, not regarding any of the "special" functions.

There is no "free" Nero. And there is nothing like "quality of the cd/dvd burnt with it, not regarding any of the "special" functions". It either burns or it doesn't.

Nero 7 still has not been released online.  As previously stated it won't be released until November 2nd.  There are some other ways of getting Nero 7 but they can't be talked about here.  It is also not 100% known if it will include a new mpeg-4 AAC encoder and HE-AAC encoder.  I am guessing it will but you never know.  Current versions are still based on 2.99.999999999 and haven't upgraded fully to version 3.0

Actually, it is 100% sure that the new AAC encoder will be included.

Perhaps he meant the OEM version versus the full retail? I'm not sure about all differences there myself.

The new encoder will be in. If it isn't, I will get a baseball bat and head off to the responsible person to "fix" it.

I would be very suprised if the OEM version did not use the exact same modules to burn CD/DVDs as the retail version. That is pretty low-level code.

So, the quality of burned tracks should be exactly the same.

The Premium version can make it easier to burn, depending on what you do.

Thanks Garf. I knew we could count on you to stay on top of "quality control."

If people are only interested in Nero for their AAC encoder: it's now 100.000 MB to get it. Id like to ask to someone to send me the file, but I suppose that this kind of distribution is illegal.

I didn't even know that parts of if were up for download.  I am downloading both versions to see what the difference is between the two and if in fact it comes with the long awaited new nero mpeg-4 AAC encoder (I am guessing it will but you never know).  The file name with yt in it is a bit larger.  It is going to take me about 10 minutes to download the ~100mb files.

I will report back when I have my findings which probably won't be until 6:00 pm Mountain Time as I have a lab today that will run extremely late.

what about h264 encoder?, tools?, will this require upgrade to nero 7 (from nero 6) or it will be a standalone modul (like nero recode), or what?

will there be hinting support in new versions? (for h264 inside mp4 that is)

I just hope that the new AAC encoder will be available for Nero 6 users as well.
I second that wish. though I doubt they will distribute the encoder alone or make it available for 6.x users.

Just checked, both versions are demo's.  I am still not sure what the difference is between the two installation files.  I only have another minute before I go to class.

Well it appears that there is a different encoder in there, 4.2.1.0.  Though the opitions dialog for the encoder still the same, only LC or HE, Fast or High, as well as the same VBR profiles as before.

I tried encoding a few samples at LC Streaming::Medium fast, and found the average bitrate to be 146kbps using 4.2.1.0 compaired to 169kbps using 3.2.0.7 with the same settings.

I'll leave it to people with more sensitive ears to make comments about quality.

That FTP is maxed out by now.

Here's a list where you can have an idea of all Nero mirrors (some of them don't contain Nero 7)

[a href="http://filemirrors.com/search.src?file=Nero-6.6.0.16.exe&size=34235626]http://filemirrors.com/search.src?file=Ner...e&size=34235626[/url]

garf: right, thats nero recode 2 (seems to work fine with registered version of nero6?.), so this will be updated separatelly from nero7 package or ..?

---

my current version of nero is 6.6.0.12
and nero recode 2 shows 2.2.6.17 (is that the most uptodate version of h264 or?)

There isn´t new version of AVC (new High Profile with a lot of  speed/quality impovements ). More probably it will be here in december.

New Nero AAC 3.0.0.3 has a nice quality.

guruboolez did a test on Nero AAC V 3.2.0.15 and it did not do well when compared to Lame 3.97a11, MPC (mppenc 1.15v), and Vorbis (aoTuV beta 4).  The Nero encoder did better than FAAC V 1.24.1.  The newer Nero AAC encoders were based off of the older 2.9.9.999999 encoder version.

I just did a small test on a I pulled from my desk.  I ripped one track (4:45) at the VBR transparent setting at two settings: VBR Transparent (110-150kblps LC AAC) and VBR Streaming (100-120kbps LC AAC).  The tracked ripped to VBR transparent AAC with Nero 6.6 with Nero encoder 3.2.0.20 resulted in a file being 6.8 MB with a average bitrate of 197.  I then ripped the same track at the same settings with Nero 7 with Nero encoder 4.2.1.0 and it resulted in a file being 6.2 MB with a average bitrate of 179kbps.  Both resulting bitrates are above the assigned avergage birtates that nero reports (110-150kbps) but the song ripped with Nero AAC 4.2.1.0 was closer.

I was unable to rip a track at the VBR streaming setting with Nero AAC 3.2.0.20.  However, I ripped the same 4:45 track with Nero AAC 4.2.1.0 at the VBR streaming setting and it resulted in a file with a size of 5.7 MB and a average bitrate of 163kbps.

I have completed a ABX test with the following encoders and settings:
Lame 3.97b1 -V 4 --vbr-new (~161kbps VBR)
Nero AAC 4.2.1.0 VBR streaming (~163kbps VBR)
iTunes 6.0.1.3 with QuickTime 7.0.3 mpeg-4 AAC at 160kbps VBR
(Just for kicks) Lame 3.97b1 -V 2 --vbr-new (~215kbps VBR)

Well, the results are way too long to post.  I used my Dell Inspiron XPS Gen. 2 with a Sigmatel C Major sound card hooked up to my Logitech Z680 (500 watt RMS) speaker system via a dixital coaxil connection.
Here is a summary of the results (only 7 tests run on each encoder, after 7 I could not effictively judge anything):
Lame (-V 4): 5/7
Nero AAC: 2/7
iTunes mpeg-4 AAC: 3/7
Lame (-V 2): 0/7

Again, this is just a preliminary test not conducted on my Sure E3's or anything special, just my normal sound equipment.  I have been training long and hard just to be able to discriminate between 128kbps mpeg-4 AAC and the source.  This is just on my equipment with my ears.  It was damned hard to complete this test and I did not include the older Nero AAC encoder so I can't really comment on if they improved the encoder or not.  However, I do remember doing a ABX blind test with Nero AAC 3.2.0.20 tested against the iTunes 6 (QuickTime 7) at the same bitrate for a metal track (Judas Priest - Judas Rising) and the iTunes mpeg-4 AAC encoder easily beat the Nero AAC encoder.

Edit:  I should have mentioned that the track I used for the ABX test was a rock track.  This test was also just conducted for curiousity, not to actually test the Nero AAC encoder.  I trust a more thourough test from guruboolez (or someone of similar stature) than I trust my own test results.

The sound quality of the new HE-AAC encoder @ 32kbps is.... AMAZING ! ! !
This is what I've been dreaming of for such a long time..
