Why does Foobar 2000 lock up Windows XP?

I recently installed Foobar 2000 to copy my CD collection to FLAC format and I have installed a 300GBhard disc to house the collection.  My knowledge of the program is rudimentary, but I have fumbled to the point that it serves my immediate purpose.  However, there appears to be some sort of memory leak problem because after I copy 10 CDs or so the whole computers suddenly breaks down and locks up.  Sometimes I have to turn the computer off manually because I cannot manage a proper system shutdown otherwise.  I have found XP to be extremely stable until I started using Foobar.  Can someone give me any advice re this problem?

- does it happen with random songs, or with specific ones?
- soundcard drivers?
- try different output-method?
- overclocking?
- not really "locked up" but just busy rewriting whole files because of tag-issues?
- XP?
I am arrogant and I can afford it because I deliver.

This is not a playback or output problem.  Foobar locks up as I continue to convert additional CDs to FLAC, even if I shut down Foobar and restart it after each disc, after an hour or so the whole computer goes south.  My soundcard and driver are whatever came with my Hewlett Packard Pavilion Desktop.  I think sound is integrated onto the motherboard.  The program seems to function fine, except that it eventually overruns my computer.

Have you set the diskwriter encoding priority correctly in the preferences?

Sorry:  I'm not sure what you mean.  Only priority I see when I click on Diskwriter is thread priority.  I have no idea what thread priority is, but the slider is set at about 25 percent up from minimum.  I'm pretty much in the dark and haven't yet found anything resembling a user's manual.

Thank you for what I'm sure is good advice, but I don't know how to find diskreiter encoding priority settings.  I don't know what output methods are, or tag-issues.  Can somebody tell me where to find some general instructions and explanations of how to use this program?  I just want a reliable program to create, catalog, and play back FLAC files for several hundred CDs through a decent audio system without having to reboot my computer approximately once per hour in the FLAC file creation process.  Maybe the problem persists into the playback phase, but I'm not there yet.

It would certainly help if you could state in detail the exact procedure that you used to create FLAC files. Every little bit of information counts, and the more precise your explanation is, the better.

If not, it all crumbles down into a game of twenty questions, and we don't want that to happen.

I am using XP SP2 and I close/reopen Foobar 2000 regularly to try to guard against a crash.  I left click on components and left click on  play audio cd.  Then I left click on my cd drive and then I left click on add to playlist. freedb then provides me with data.  I select the whole slate of tracks and right click to get the menu to select properties.  I left click on properties and usually edit the genre and add a metadata category ALPHA and update the files.  Then I right click on the entire selected slate and click on convert and click on run conversion.  My output preset is FLAC : compression level 7, 4096 bytes padding.  My output file name formatting is %genre%\%alpha%\%album%\$num(%discnumber%,1)$num(%tracknumber%,2) %artist% - %title%  My output directory is F:\CDs  My thread priority is about 25% up from minimum.  Preferred bit depth is 16, no dithering, no buffering,  no active DSPs.  My output device is primary sound driver.  Kernel streaming shows REaltek AC97 Audio with buffer length 1000 ms.  Waveout is MS sound mapper with buffer 1000 ms.  I counted 67 loaded component libraries and can list them if necessary, but it is rather laborious to type them all in.

As I recall, the only add-in that I have is for freedb.  I also had to do something to make XP FLAC compatible, as I recall.  The foobar package that I downloaded from the official website was standard, not some beta version.  It included the FLAC capability without modification.

This morning the computer is still running after I went to bed during a FLAC conversion session.  I suspect that it might help to close FOOBAR between conversion sessions, but this does not always prevent an unexpected crash.  A crash usually manifests itself  by FOOBAR not making any progress.  When I try to shut down, I usually get a message that Bill Gates would like a report, which I usually don't send.  Often I have to shut down by holding the on-off switch for 5 seconds even though the mouse is still functional but software shutdown won't work at all.  Sometimes it gets to the final screen 'Windows is Shutting Down'.  I have left it there for at least 15 minutes to no avail.

I hope I have provided some useful hints.  I appreciate your help.  Let me know if there is any other info I can provide.

I think I would recommend a dedicated ripping program, if you care about quality. (I think you would, judging from your use of FLAC. ) You could use foobar2000 to load the resulting wav files, and then you can "copy" the metadata over from the CD to the wav files, by arranging the files like this:

CD track 1
CD track 2
CD track 3
wav file 1
wav file 2
wav file 3

Then you select all six files, and right-click, Masstagger, Copy tags. You can then run the conversion from wav to FLAC as you used to.

Other than that, I can't spot anything weird. I have no problems with thread priority at 50%.

Could you give us a list of your components, please?

Choose Run.
Type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press enter.
Type the following, including the quotes.
Quote
dir "c:\program files\foobar2000\components" > c:\foobar2000_list.txt

You can open the resulting file and show us the contents through cut-and-paste.

I'm a little fuzzy about what you're saying.  I tried and failed to follow your suggestion and encountered a few problems.  First, as soon as I enter Foobar and read my disc it automatically attaches the freedb metadata to my tracks (which I can then edit) so I never see track 1, track 2, etc without the metadata.  When I run the conversion I get wav files with the edited metadata already attached, which seems ok, since I don't have to go through the masstagger exercise.  Then I can convert the wav files to flac files.  But why go through the double conversion??  Why is this better than going straight from the CD to flac via Foobar?  It certainly takes a lot longer (approx twice as long), and I've already spent the better part of the last two weeks converting approx 1/3 of my 600 CDs.

Second, can you elaborate on what you mean by a dedicated ripping program and what would you suggest and why would this approach give me better results than Foobar?  I'm a retired mechanical engineer and I don't have ripping experience outside Foobar which I discovered a couple weeks ago, so I don't know what's available and why other s/w is better.

Thanks for your patience.

I have gone to the url and hav now installed this version of foo_flaccer, which is one day newer than the version I had installed.  This may be important.  Perhaps there was a bug in the earlier version.  Thanks.

At 11:30 Foobar crashed for the first time today.  I hit Start - Shut down- Turn off computer and after responding to Foobar not responding and CD Traypal not responding and refusing to send details to Bill Gates and fighting with the mouse I finally got to the final Windows is shutting down screen which I watched for 5 minutes and went to lunch.  After lunch the computer had indeed shut down.  I rebooted and started Foobar and thankfully my data are still there for a CD that had not come up from freedb and which I had filled in all the metadata.  So the new version of foo_flaccer did not solve the problem.

What (I think) he meant is that you should convert using foobar, but instead of the flaccer-plugin, you should use a flac commandline encoder.
During Foobar install, you can select to install cli-encoder, if you didnt', it should be in the 3rd party plugins section of foobar2000.org, otherwise, just do a reinstall (as far as I know all settings shouldn't be reset if you do a reinstall).

Then in the diskwriter options, select commandline encoder, in preferences, browse to the flac.exe, or whatever file you got from the commandline encoder (get it from flac.sourceforge.com), specificy commandline-switches (someone else should help you with this, as I've never used the commandline flac), then just convert the same way.

geraldisaacs, which installer did you download when you installed foobar2000? Did you do a “Full” install? You have very many plugins installed, and I doubt if you're currently making use of them all. I recommend you delete any you don't need, to avoid current/potential problems.

What do you plan to use foobar2000 for, and what kind of files do you have? You might not need shn, ofr, tta, or kernel streaming support.

geraldisaacs, which installer did you download when you installed foobar2000? Did you do a “Full” install? You have very many plugins installed, and I doubt if you're currently making use of them all. I recommend you delete any you don't need, to avoid current/potential problems.

What do you plan to use foobar2000 for, and what kind of files do you have? You might not need shn, ofr, tta, or kernel streaming support.

I downloaded the special installer of Foobar originally, per a suggestion somewhere I don't remember.  Obviously, I don't know which pulgins are really needed. My sole intention is to convert about 600 mostly-classical CDs to flac format so I can play them directly from my computer through my audio system.  I also have a lot of MP3s that I would like to play through Foobar.  I like the way the program sorts and columnizes the selections and am happy with the functionality I now have.  My only problem is the instability.  I haven't been in playback mode long enough to know if the instability extends to that mode.

I have now isolated all of your suggested files into a separate 'Isolate' folder and will proceed.  Earlier today, by religiously closing Foobar after each CD conversion and reopening it for the next one, I was able to work about 4 hour without a crash.  But I left Foobar open and idle at the end of 4 hours, and when I returned to the computer another 4 hours later it was unstable and crashed (Again, this was before I had removed the suspect files).  I had to do about 3 consecutive 'pull the plug' reboots to reattain stability and Foobar functionality.

Should I continue to remove plugins to see how far I can strip the program?  Can you tell me the ones that are absolutely vital to save me some time?

Again, I really appreciate your help.

foobar2000 only needs three plugins to play MP3/FLAC files and show up on the screen.

1. foo_ui_std.dll and/or foo_ui_columns.dll
2. foo_input_std.dll and/or foo_flac.dll
3. foo_output_std.dll and/or foo_out_dsound_ex.dll and/or foo_out_ks.dll

I'd recommend deleting/isolating foo_out_ks.dll and foo_shuffle.dll, just in case you haven't already.

If the problem persists after removing the plugins, there might be a problem with your computer's RAM, which might be being triggered by the FLAC compression. You might want to test your RAM for errors, using tools such as memtest86. http://www.memtest86.com/

I think you should keep the first six plugins listed above, and albumlist, clienc, console, and dbsearch, which are useful, and also cdda, diskwriter, flaccer, and flac, which you'll need.

I don't use history or infobox, but you might like them.

If you created your "Isolates" directory underneath "foobar2000", like this: c:\progam files\foobar2000\Isolates, then the components will still be used. You have to move components completely outside the foobar2000 directory to stop them from getting loaded.

Thanks for the tip.  I will move them immediately.
