How to detect which version of LAME you have?

I recently tried installing the v3.96.1 of the LAME mp3 encoder. But I was not sure how I installed it. I believe I right clicked on one of the .acm files and just clicked installed and I think it might have worked. Is there anyway to check if I have successfully installed it or check which version I have? Thanks.

One way of finding out (which usually works with most ACM codecs in Windows):

Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager

Find "Audio Codecs" under "Sound, video and game controllers", then check the Properties.

Oh, I see. I was also wondering if this was the correct way to install the codec? I wasn't sure if right clicking on the .acm file was correct or not.

You don't need ACM. To install LAME download the EXE/DLL bundle, unzip the archive, drop the executable into a directory of your choice, then point your frontend (i.e. EAC, RazorLAME etc.) to it. Some programs support the DLL; in that case you extract the DLL into the program's directory instead.

Generally people don't install lame.  You just use lame.exe for your encoding.

I use front end program which uses lame.dll....really lazy to type all those command

Cdex can do this and it's free
dBpoweramp is free (older version)

ACM is just lame! very restircted settings, it is not going to use the full potential of LAME encoder. Just use ACM for video encoding....besides that, it is useless
