Vorbis + Speex; Is It Possible?
Dear all,

-Is it possible to unite Vorbis and Speex 'technology' together? I mean could the developers do this in future release (1.1.2 or 2.0)? WMA had already do this (WMA VBR, Lossless, Speech, etc) and have only one stream ID (if I'm not mistaken). 

-If this could happen, we will benefit from reduced codec 'numbers' installed in our system, broader support/coverage for Vorbis, and Vorbis also can use Speex tuning in speech for movies/films/toons when the characters are talking (isn't it called speech too?). 

-Also, why don't Vorbis drops the bitrate down to ZERO (0kbps) when there is PLAIN SILENT in the audio stream (such as when the characters are just staring at each other - in anime mostly)? Anybody know why?

No, those technologies are completely different and can't be integrated. Plus it's impossible to properly seperate voice and music to process each different.

All those WMA flavours (Pro, Lossless, etc.) are completely seperate codecs. It's just marketing to call them all "Windows Media Audio".

Vorbis lowers the bitrate to ~3-5 kbps during perfect digital silence (lower isn't possible as you still need some timing, framing and syncing information). If it doesn't drop that low it's not perfect silence.

If it is true, what is wrong with this behaviour? Why it should WASTE the bits? If codec is efficient so much, that it could compess something into few kbps, it is no reason to do otherwise.

..to combine the shortcomings of both and make it harder to decode? One could combine many formats in one, and the resulting format will be ugly, decoder - HUGE (and buggy). Other software/players anyway support only part of the UnitedFormat, so it is a bad idea...

The Ogg framing mechanism does allow for multiple logical streams to be mixed (for instance audio and video into the same stream, but likwise that requires seperate decoders as was mentioned).  Ogg mechanism does use an ID, it's called a serial number (the older encoders used to generate one randomnly for each bitstream, but appearently they don't anymore?) (unless Foobar doesn't show it under technical info ) You can also specify them to if I am not mistaken during encoding.  . I don't think you would be able to mix seperate audio codecs though it would get to confusing.

Whatever happened to Floggy anyway? Is it present in aoTuVb4? If not, could it be merged into it as a separate encoding option (kind of like DivX3 did with its low motion and high motion alternatives)?
