Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 adds FLAC support

I just found out today that Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 has quietly added native FLAC encoding and decoding support to their popular CD and DVD burning suite (formerly known as the Easy CD & DVD Creator). This product is out now and I saw a copy at Best Buy today. I didn't buy it as I use Nero 6.6, but I have used their previous versions several years ago.

The box "spine" lists the FLAC audio format as supported by Easy Media Creator 7.5 for both the import and export of audio files. This is great news! It marks the first major commercial CD/DVD burning suite that natively supports FLAC encoding and decoding of audio files right out of the box. The only other CD burning app that natively supports FLAC (without plugins to download) is Poikosoft's Easy CD DA Extractor. Nero doesn't do native FLAC, but hopefully Ahead will add it now to keep up with Roxio/Adtaptec/Sonic's latest offering.

So everyone who sent E-mails to Roxio as part of the "Spread FLAC" initiative, it seems to be starting to pay off. Several apps have recently added native FLAC support, but Roxio's is the one of the largest so far, following Yahoo's new Music Engine.

Update:  I haven't yet put up a Spread FLAC site, as I only received comments from 2 people with suggestions. As I have more time in the future I plan to work on the site.

If anyone has this new Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5, please post your comments about the quality (or lack thereof) of their FLAC support.

Once we verify it does indeed support FLAC encoding and decoding, Josh will likely want to add Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7.5 to the main FLAC page so people can know that it now is supporting FLAC.

Thanks!

Added:
According to their Roxio.com web site FAQ, Easy Media Creator 7.5 supports saving files in FLAC for audio capture (from microphone or an Internet Radio station) and also opening and saving FLAC files in their sound editor. This is in addition to ripping audio CDs into FLAC files and making audio CDs from existing FLAC files.
You can verify FLAC support at this web site: http://www.roxio.com/en/products/emc75/faq.jhtml#Music

Well,
I just downloaded the Roxio program. It doesn't see any of my FLAC files!  I'm none too pleased to say the least.  I've posted a message over at their web site and will contact support later today. If I try to drag a file directly to the CD creator I get a message saying that it isn't a supported file type!

What version do you have? Is it the latest 7.5? Earlier versions did not support FLAC. Their web site support FAQ and retail product box spine both claim FLAC support for Easy Media Creator 7.5. I ordered a copy but have yet to receive it to try it out. Also no one has yet posted confirmation to this thread that they used FLAC with this program yet.

It is the latest 7.5 verion.  The "sound editor" protion of the program recognizes the FLAC files, but nothing else.  They also seem not to support 24 bit soundcards, I have a M-Audio 24/96 card and sound editor wouldn't load unless I selected my computers internal sound chip.

According to Roxio tech support FLAC is NOT supported for the "Custom Creator" portion of the program. Only the "Sound Editor" supports FLAC. I've filed for a refund.  I was hoping that FLAC would be supported by the entire suite of programs bundled with the suite, but that's not the case.  They suggested that I convert my FLAC files to WAV and then use the WAV files to make a CD with "Custom Creator". No thanks.  But I suppose it's a step in the right direction.  I didn't play with the program too much, but I didn't notice any options for setting the FLAC compression level either...

Bumped.

Hopefully someone can comment on this.  From the Roxio web site it looks like there is full FLAC support but not from what I could gather....

Has anyone else tried this Roxio program yet?

Yes, I would also like to know the answer to this. Does anyone own Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 to see if you can rip to FLAC files and burn audio CDs directly using FLAC files?

Here is the reply I got from Roxio:
====================================================
Thank you for contacting Roxio Technical Support

Media Manager will not see FLAC files. Creator Classic will let you add FLAC files to a data CD
(for backup), but not to an audio CD. The statement is that READING and WRITING FLAC is
supported.

In Sound Editor, you can burn audio CDs from your projects. You can also export individual
tracks or clips. When you export, edit the file format, and you will see FLAC is an option.

If the information provided does not resolve your issue simply reply to this email. Please do not delete any of the existing text as it contains information to ensure your request is routed correctly.

Regards,

Roxio Technical Support

I hope that helps people in deciding if this Roxio product will meet their needs.  Hopefully they will expand FLAC support in the next edition.

Josh,

I've noticed that you have removed Roxio from your FLAC webpage. Are there any developments concerning Roxio?  The program suite does have some FLAC support.  Thanks for your great work!

since the only real FLAC support seems to be in the sound editor, it doesn't really fit into any of the categories on the download page, and the links.html page only has open source software.

I need to redo and consolidate software links; I'll probably put it back in then.
