the reason your 3.85 sounds so good is because it lowpasses at 3779-3912 (--lowpass 3779)... if you do Lame 3.96b2 at the same freq, it sounds the same to me. hell, it's almost good enough to put in stereo... (just plain -b 16)

I'm not sure if its bad form to reply to topics from a year ago, but I've been at the army so...

I used an alpha version of 3.94 when I did that line.  I used the -a to downmix to mono.
Lossy.
