I have to agree with Mvdb.

And you don't have to be a genius to understand that things like taste change constantly, so my top 5 list would be different even now when you oppose it to my last posting  . Not to mention my taste a few years ago.

So, chill out, and post your top 5 if you like...

Cheers,

Now this is a hard hard question.
I'll restrict it to 'popular' music, and to CDs which I already own.

* Plaid - Double Figure
* Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
* Radiohead - either The Bends or OK Computer
* The Who - Who's Next
* The Beatles - 1967-1970

My choice will probably be different next year . Part of the problem is finding an album which is consistently good. I love Lamb, Fridge, Massive Attack, et cetera, but all of their albums have fairly mediocre sections.

Dear god, even restricting this to stuff I own is impossible

Jeff Buckley - Grace
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Orbital - Brown Album
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Radiohead - OK Computer

Honourable mentions

Autechre - Tri Repetae
Boards of Canada - Music has the right to have children
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the head
Depeche Mode - Violator
Plaid - Double Figure
Rachmaninov - The Symphonies (Ashkenazy, Previn and LSO)
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
Radiohead - The Bends
The Cinematic Orchestra - Every day

Arghhhh and so many more... what about Lamb, Leftfield, Massive Attack, Coltrane.... overload, overload, imploding, argggghh

"The Doors" - Doors
"Loaded" - Velvet Underground
"Blood on the Tracks" - Bob Dylan
'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" - David Bowie

I like Seasons In The Abyss quite a bit too, but I never tire of Reign In Blood.  As for Jane's Addiction etc, I love almost everything Perry Farrell's done.  The Porno For Pyros stuff does have a little different feel to it than the Jane's Addiction stuff does, but they're still very similar.  Perhaps you'll like it now if you give them another chance, still has that 'Perry' feel to it.  All great albums:

PSI Com - PSI Com - 1985 (1500 copies on vinyl only) Re-released by XXX Records in 1993
Jane's Addiction - Jane's Addiction - 1987 (live recording)
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking - 1988 (Perhaps my fave album by anyone)
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual - 1990
Porno For Pyros - Porno For Pyros - 1993
Porno For Pyros - Good God's Urge - 1996
Jane's Addiction - Kettle Whistle - 1997
Perry Farrell - Song Yet To Be Sung - 2001

i also like the band 'Samael'.

Indeed those bands should not be forgotten. Theatre of Tragedy's Aégis has somewhat of a permanent position in my heart

And now that you've mentioned it, pretty much everything from Samael rules. Ceremony of Opposites, Passage and Eternal are very good albums indeed.

Marillion - Clutching At Straws
Runrig - Amazing Things
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Slowdive - Souvlaki

Hrmm.. it's pretty much impossible to name my top 5 albums, so I'll name top 5 bands instead:

- Emperor
- Immortal
- Dissection

(The great 3... who really got me interested in extreme metal...  I recently went to see Immortal in San Fransisco a couple months back and they put on the best show I'd ever seen.. it was simply awesome.)

- Aphex Twin
- Autechre
- Acid Bath
- Arcturus

(yeah, that's 7, not 5.. so deal with it )

Other stuff that's really damn good:

- Ulver
- (any of Garm's other work)
- Bola
- Plaid
- Katatonia
- Lustmord
- Skinny Puppy
- I, Parasite
- Android Lust
- Solefald
- Summoning
- Abigor
- Korova/Korovakill
- Thorns
- Dismal Euphony (except their latest)
- Death
- Suffocation
- Cryptopsy
- Nile
- Soilwork
- Einherjer
- Borknagar
- Nevermore
- Novembers Doom
- Children of Bodom
- Old Man's Child
- Bal-Sagoth
- Opeth
- Zyklon
- Myrkskog
- Dodheimsgard
- Thyrfing
- Mithotyn
- Windir
- At The Gates
- The Crown
- Ebony Tears

Other stuff I would have mentioned if it were not for the bands doing/saying some annoyingly stupid things these days:

- Dimmu Borgir (the whole commercialization of their style and attitude is becoming annoying, plus they pulled a no show in San Fransisco twice when I went to go see them.. grr .  All up to PEM are mostly good albums though.. and PEM absolutely kicks ass if for nothing else than the drumming (the rest of the album sadly gets old fast, even with Simen on backing vocals (favorite metal vocalist)).  Nick Barker is simply awesome, probably my favorite drummer.  Other favorite metal drummers: Trym (emperor), Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, Pete Sandoval, "The Dude from Nile" - can't recall his name atm)
- Cradle of Filth (Up to Midian is mostly good, Cruelty is probably my favorite. Their latest EP's have been sucking hard, and they said they want to go for a "simpler" style... wtf?)
- In Flames (Up to Colony is mostly good.  Latest albums suck (boring and repetitious.. mostly rehashes of Colony-style) and now touring with Slipknot == wtf?)
- Covenant (of Norway) (Was good up to Nexus Polaris.. wtf happened?)

I'm not really certain if the bands I listed first are my favorites for sure, but they seem to be the bands I listen to the most consistently, and whose albums I tend to enjoy with the most regularity.  As for the other bands, they are just some of my other favorites.  There are way more, but these are just some that come to mind upon writing this.

There's quite a bit of electronic music I listen to that I didn't list.  I guess that's kind of odd, but the truth of the matter is that I've listened to metal longer and tend to enjoy more metal than electronic music I guess.

As for reasons why I don't list specific albums, most of the time if I really like an artist, I like all their albums.. and it usually depends on my mood as to which album of theirs I'd prefer to listen to at a given time.
