Changing the file extension does not hurt the audio quality.

As far as I know the only difference are the extention. m4a means mp4 audio and is audio in mp4 container, most likely aac codec. The difference in naming are only to separate audio only files from mp4 files that might contain video. So mass renaming shouldn't affect your files at all....

here's a little renaming scheme, if that's useful.

The plug-in(convert aac to mp4) in fb2k only "transmuxing" aac to mp4,
the difference is, aac is an audio format, mp4 is a container.

hi, yesterday i installed dbpoweramp in my computer, and it add an id tag in the properity of aac, mp3 files, and when i saw the difference between the mp4 (nero encoder codec and itunes codec), there is some differene described in id tag, and it contained some codec in the file, such as "Nero AAC Codec 3.0.0.4" &  "itunorm 000002EA 0000039D 00001E4B 00001F9A 00026826 00026826 00007765 00007679 000268B0 000237B9", but for the audio quality, they all almost the same! i can't hear the difference, for itunes codec, i use 256kbps, as i know, itunes is use cbr, for the nero codec, i use the vbr 160~250kbps lc-aac.
