Itunes Compilation Tag In Id3v2

Out of curiosity I am wondering where in the ID3v2 tag of an MP3 Apple places its iTunes Compilation tag.  I looked at the MP3 file in Foobar2000 and no new field exists even after reloading the information from the file.  I'm guessing iTunes places it in an area that perhaps isn't readable by Foobar.  I know that in AAC files a "Compilation" field is created, however, I can't find such a thing with MP3.  If anybody knows, let me know.  Again, I'm just curious

It adds a TCMP frame into the tag, which is not a standard ID3v2 frame type.

So in general, it's recommended not to use the Compilation tag in iTunes since it is added with a non-standard frame?  I notice that every other tag editor I use doesn't recognize it and if I edit the MP3 with another tag editor the Compilation field gets deleted anyway.  Other than the Compilation field, how is iTunes' standard compliance with ID3v1/2 tags?

what does the 'compilation tag' do? Where's the advantage of using it?
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.
LAME + Joint Stereo doesn't destroy 'Stereo'

iTunes can manage your music (optional). So if one CD has songs from different artists, without the Compilation tag, a folder for each artist is created. With the Compilation tag these songs are put in a single folder.

It's used to separate compilations from regular albums in iTunes.  If this tag is set in iTunes then it will display all compilation albums under "Compilations" in iTunes.  I guess it's not really a big deal as you could just create a smart playlist and tell it to look for "Compilation" in the comment field and that would essentially do the same thing.  In the regular media library view, however, the compilation albums wouldn't be grouped together.

Meh. Probably won't hurt anything. And if some other tag program does remove it, iTunes doesn't much care. It stores that in the database as well as the tag and really only looks at the database for that information.

Pretty good, except for the extra comment frames that SoundCheck adds to the file.
