mp3 on Knoppix?

I was running knoppix the other day and played some MP3 morse code practice files with XMMS and they were played too fast. Any ideas why this happened?

quite a few players I've tried (developers are good about fixing once notified) play double speed on monophonic files.  Also faster with low sample rates as suggested above.
