Gapless CD ripping with Exact Audio Copy

Hey! I just bought a brand new IRIVER H140 and decided to rip and encode my whole cd collection to MP3. Unfortunately, I have got lots of gapless CD. As an example, dj sets by Global Underground (www.globalunderground.co.uk). So I need assistance on tuning my Exact Audio Copy and Lame to make a gapless copys. Thanks!

The only way to have gapless playback is to rip a whole album into a single file (the IMG icon).

iRiver was supposed to provide a firmware that would allow gapless playback, but instead they provided a kind of stupid "remove silence at end of track" firmware. The problem is on iRiver's side, not with EAC or Lame.

I know that H140 don't allow gapless playback. But I was trying to rip an album for listening it on my PC, and there were gaps between tracks. Could you tell me more about that thing that you mentioned first.

Basically you can create a cuesheet + an image file (the whole album extracted as a single file).

But that's not necessary at all to do so if what you want is to play your files from your computer because actually mp3 audio files which are encoded using Lame are already gapless.
They can be played without gaps if the software player you use uses the appropriate decoder.

From what I know, foobar2000 does play gaplessly mp3 files encoded with Lame. There is also a way to get the same results with Winamp (I'm not sure - never tried - please someone confirm this).

If you rip with EAC using the default settings, encode with LAME, and playback with Foobar2000, there will be no gaps.

Yep, this is true. LAME puts sample accurate header info in each file which works perfectly on Foobar. Possibly Winamp also supports this?

I would imagine you can also burn back to CD from LAME gaplessly with Foobar.

I don't think any portable yet supports gapless with compressed audio, which is stunningly gormless oversight in my view, and the reason I'm not going to bother with them for the time being.

ciao,
R.

Yes, you can do gapless mp3s with Winamp as well using Shibatch's in_mpg123 and any of the gapless output plugins that you can find.  The one bundled with the FLAC installer works fine.

So, if I understand you right, no special tuning for EAC and Lame needed? Just rip and encode? I am asking because I have seen lots of stuff in EAC's Action menu related to gaps.

Those are gaps that are existant on the original cd's; often called pre-gaps.  Has nothing to do with gaplessness of the chosen encoder.

FLAC support - interesting.

But is it gapless with MP3? As I understand it, only LAME faciltates true gapless with it's insertion of header info, so a player would have to read this data.

My understanding is that the Karma makes use of the LAME header, and that it is gapless.
