JBL on tour speakers

I have had these speakers for a couple of days now and all I can say is AMAZING.

I have been waiting for a set of portable speakers like this for quite a while. I listened to the Sony ones and was less than impressed.

The jbl on tour speaklers are very well thought out and they sound amazing for their size (7"x3.5"x1.4"). For sharing your portable music on the road they are fantastic. They are only 3 watts per channel but they fill a good size room very well. They do not sound distorted at all at highest volume. I'm also blown away by battery time on 4 AAA batteries (they also run on supplied power cord). I have also been using them for my Notebook computer.

I picked mine up for $71 at buy.com:

They are white as well so they match the iPod very well.

I would really like to hear these based on your report. All the speakers with small aluminium domes I have heard have sounded very "cheap" - generally good midrange response, accentuated upper mid and very little or distorted bass response. This is not due to anything other than the mechanical realities of building small drivers with relatively high power (compared to headphones).

COE (Computer Optimized Equalization) – The JBL On Tour system equalization was computer optimized to provide a rich, complete sound stage.

Obviously they try to address the shortcomings of small, stiff drivers by equalizing them flat. This may work very well or it may be awful. Based on JBL's reputation I would guess it works well.

I'm no expert but they sound great to me. Obviously they don't compare to a good set of larger speakers or a nice boom box but look at how big they are. They fit in my short's pocket (they are curved so they fit quite well actually).

I will say that they sound better than my notebook's sound system which is pretty nice for a notebook that has a "sub" (Dell Inspiron 9100) . I have not listened to them side-by-side with the Sony SRS-T88 but I have heard the T88 and I think they sound a lot better.

There is not a lot of bass but it does sound good. I have heard nothing this small that sounds even close.

Here is a review at pcmag:

I agree mostly with the review. As the review states there is not a lot of bass. This is kind of to be expected on something this small. I find it very listenable. I do miss the bass on occasion but I realize there are trade-offs for something this small.

It is great for what I will use it for: I can throw it in a fanny pack with my mp3 player, put it in pocket of notebook computer case and use as extra speaker (adds a lot when playing games and dvds), use as speaker for portable dvd player, external speaker for pocket pc.

Very interesting, almost exactly what I have been looking for. I was really interested in the Altec Lansing InMotion speakers for use with my iPod, until I found out the price (150 usd). It seems that any time you add the name "iPod" in the product description of a music accessory, it automatically means "hey, lets charge at least 50% more than the product is really worth". At 100 usd, the JBL's aren't bad, but at 71 they are half the price of the Altec's.

This is something I can also use with my laptop when I travel. I'm going to order these right away when I get to the states next week...

I'll add my review in the next couple weeks!

cbope,

PCmag did rate the InMotion better in sound than the On Tour. I have not had a chance to listen to the InMotion though. It doesn't matter to me though because I want to use speakers for other things and my mp3 player is not an iPod.

The On Tour sounds great to me but if you get a chance listen to them first. The On Tour are 3 watts per channel and the InMotion is only at 2 per channel so I imagine the On Tour are a little bit louder. The On Tour is also smaller and weighs less.

Good Luck!
