? about tagging AAC audio files...

Hi.

I am still fairly new to the world of AAC audio and I have found that I like it much better than the standard mp3 format. Since I am still just learning about this format, I am a bit confused about something and I was hoping someone could help me out with this. The question I have is.... what sort of results can I expect when tagging AAC files? I am used to ID3 tagging for mp3 files, which allows all kinds of track information to be stored into the file. In fact, as just about everyone on here knows, when you hover the cursor of your mouse over an mp3 file that has been tagged, a dialogue box appears displaying all sorts of info about the particular audio track.

Now, I have used several different programs to encode to AAC, even ones that are supposed to preserve ID3 tags, but just about all I end up with in the final result is the file name which includes the band name as well as the song title. When I hover my cursor over this type of file, I get no info as I would with a tagged mp3 file. I suppose my question is this mainly... am I getting the results that you are supposed to get at this point with tagging AAC files or is something not working for me and is the file itself supposed to store more information about the artist and track itself? I kinda miss all the info and things you can tag into an mp3 and I would like to think you could do the same thing with an AAC audio file as well. Can anyone explain to me the results I can expect at this stage of the game?

Thanks,

Jeff H.

This is windows fault.  Windows doesn't understand MP4 files and therefore can't display any associated tag information.  If you've ripped you're files with iTunes or Nero, the tags are definately there, but windows can't display (at least not without additional software).

iTunes can tag AAC files. However, Apple uses their own tagging schme so I do not think the tags import across programs if you were to load these songs into, say, Foobar or Winamp. I could be wrong though.

fb2k and Winamp both use iTunes' tagging system, because there is no official MP4 tagging yet.

Thanks for the replies. I really wish they would get on the ball and create an official tagging program for AAC since it seems like more and more people are starting to use this format. Normally, I do use Winamp to play my song files and as far as I can tell, it does import the tags of songs that I have encoded myself.

Use AAC in MP4 container, as it is meant to be. The problem you are seeing has nothing to do with AAC or MP4 tagging anyway, it's a Windows limitation.

The "official tagging" method is, IIRC, part of the MPEG-7 standard. So I doubt an "official tagging program" is what you are looking for, since nothing will support that

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but SoftPointer (the makers of Tag&Rename) also make AudioShell, a freeware AAC tag editor and viewer.  AudioShell supports all files and tags standards supported by Tag&Rename.
