Does that mean MPC is gone? And no more MusePack v1.06

**EDIT**
Thanks Citay

Andree hasn't been active for a long time. Encoder development is certainly in danger if Klemm leaves.
If Klemm is gone and Andree doesn't start working on it again, we may never see SV8.

Ohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboy...

Please let it be true. This is wonderful news. A great addition to the Vorbis dev-team it seems

But why? (Not that I'm complaining  )

I really hope Klemm doesn't stop developing mpc, it's a great format!

Ogg is also very good but to me it's not my hifi number one choice, BUT it would be my future format for portability.

But if Klemm chooses to quit mpc (never been said explicitly here!) I hope the source becomes available to other talented people who can continue the work.

great...

But one question comes up into my mind: Why?

Did Frank finally see the shining light of Open Source?
Did he have problems with Andree?

Anyway, I think of Frank as one of the most talented programmers in audiocoding and I am sure that he'll be a great help for the Vorbis team... (and hope he'll be comfortable with 'public' mailing-lists )

Can somebody really handle development for 2 codecs at the same time efficiently. To my knowledge Frank has also a day job...
Why would he start working with Vorbis just for fun now when SV8 is supposed to be out soon, and the MPC encoder needs lots of new testing and development.

I wonder if he will say anything about this publically.

Well now I'm stumped. That was the last thing I was expecting to happen, especially after this "I-want-to-program-in-peace-and-quiet" business.

JohnV: Can you give us any details, maybe some IRC logs or so? Also I'm curious why Frank actually took this step, and whether he actually has left MPC... ???

I just hope he won't continue his recent behaviour and mess up the Vorbis team's image.

Maybe, Frank, you can visit this board once more, just to tell us what's going on? ???

Very Interesting news in deed. Open-source will truly shine with a great addition. The more the merry. We will have to wait and see what happens.

Well, Garf got letter from Frank and announced the info at #vorbis. The public information was that he will work for Vorbis.

How could I know? :angel2:
1+1 is 2 and x marks the spot, or then doesn't.

Frankly, even if there was some private info, anything can happen still. Nothing is 100% until it's 100%.

Someone must have yanked his chain, so to speak.

Oh well, mpcs loss is Oggs gain.

That is truly great news for Vorbis...Frank's knowledge and experience will offer a substancial push to OGG development. Among the few that can bridge the qualitative difference among MPC and OGG to the point of no difference...just imagining OGG's portability with MPC's quality makes me drool

Well, this will be a definite move forward for ogg. But hopefully Frank works still on MPC.

Actually, MPC was never exactly open-source. You can bet Klemm's improvments were more or less merged. There's no fear of discontinued development, I imagine anyone who wants to work on this should contact Buschman. Maybe there is some non-disclosure issues with being a MPC developer. Makes sense really.

As for all the question and speculations about Klemm's work on Ogg I can offer one of my own: he wanted to work on it for personal reasons as seen in this thread. Maybe it was just coincidence. But hey, isn't that how anything gets developed? When someone wants something that works for them but doesn't exist just roll up your sleeves and start creating it.

*puts foot in mouth*

I wish there was a public announcement from Frank..

The site mysteriously vanishing and him switching to ogg seems to imply he got sued or other legal action was taken place..

I doubt it, and let's stick to what we know. All this is getting a bit too speculative. Frank will most likely tell us what he wants us to know when he is ready.

That news will make a certain student very happy

***Begin Urban Legend***
The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington engineering mid term. The answer was so profound that the Professor shared it with colleagues, which is why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or Endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law, (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

"First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:

  1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
  2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa Banyan during my Freshman year, "...that it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you." and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then, #2 cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze."

This student received the only A.
