what does the word 'yay' mean?

i'm russian and i don't know the better place to ask because HA community is the best in the whole internet.
Is 'yay' the same as 'wow'? Or what's that then?

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "wow" yields, "-- used to express strong feeling (as pleasure or surprise) "

"Yay" is not  listed.

Mmmh... Thought it means You Ain't Yankee, which would then be self-explanatory (or is it 'paradoxical' ? )
