Alt Preset with 256 max? Please help
Hi

i want to encode some industrial, grunge, ebm music with alt preset standard,
but i get really high bitrates up to 320 kbits.Average bitrate are 225kbits. I want maximum bitrate at 256 kbits.

Is this recommended and which command line should i use? Will the
alt preset work wrong if i i set max bitrate of 256kbits?

Im really new at this

thanks

Yes.  And doing this may not have the effect you expect anyway...

An average of 225kbps really isn't too bad... though I suggest that if you want a lower bitrate, while not sacrificing quality, that you use a different format.  AAC, Vorbis, or MPC are all great candidates.

It was just a problem with space. I wanted smaller files thats it. I also want to use mp3 because  i want to play it also on my dvd player. DVD Player offers not a good quality like playing mp3 on  PC but if i want to burn mp3 as wav i want to get great quality.

Ok i will use then alt preset without any changes.

thanks

Just encoded Suicide Commando - Raise Your God and get average bitrate
of 129 with r3mix.With alt preset nearly the same. I though i should get
224 or something because the music contains (my opinion) just high frequencies.

What would you recomend for this kind of music? 192 CBR?

Yeah, there's really not much of a way to get the bitrate lower than --alt-preset standard while maintaining the same level of quality.  You could always try --r3mix to see if that's ok for you, but then the quality isn't nearly as good.... and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for archiving..

--alt-preset standard

Really, your intuition may be totally wrong in guessing what is hard for the codec. 'Just' high frequencies can be easy to encode.

Trying to control the size of what you get by setting minimum and/or maximum bitrates is senseless and will not have the desired effect. There is a reason why the encoder chooses to use high/low bitrate frames.

Majmo,
If you are prepared to sacrifice high frequency components of the music you are encoding you could try --alt-preset standard -Y
Also adding a --lowpass xxx to your commandline could help lower the bitrate if you really need to. Fact is that many people cannot tell 16 kHz lowpassed  music from the 19 kHz lowpassed version. The only way to test if it satisfies your needs is doing some listening tests by yourself.
