What is the best MP3 ID3 Tagger

Ive used UltraTagger and I wasnt impressed by it. I resort to using Total Recorder to add my v1 and v2 Tags.. Surely there is a better tool out there that adds tags to your mp3s easily and efficiently

Would some one please tell me

I have downloaded both Helium2 and Tag&Renamer and they both seem very similar.. As this is the first time for me using both software I havent yet decided which is the better out of the two.  I have yet to download MP3 Renater and compare it with the other two.

Has anyone used all 3 pieces of software and compared them?

If so.. advantages, disadvantages of each one.

helium2 +: fast for tagging many files and whole albums. Supports much more fields than any other tagger. lyric3, idv1, idv2.3, id3v2.4. Tagger cataloger in one. Many options. CDDB.

helium2 -: not freeware. Slow for tagging one file at a time. Many more fields supported than average users will ever use. Many options. does not support freedb.



Since I have only looked vaguely at the others I can't say much about them.

i just started using Tag&Rename. 
It is perfect for my id3 tag needs.

One question:
Is there any downfall since it saves the tags in the ID#v2.3 format and not the id3v2.4 format?

I traditionally use winamp to configer all my id3 tags.

THis is probley a stupid question, but i figure that i would ask it anyways.....

ID3v2.3 has the largest support amongst the ID3v2 tags, while ID3v2.4 has the least... I wouldn't recommend anyone using 2.4 tags...

(2.4 uses new tag names for some of the tags which makes it non backwards compatible and thus is not so very much recommended...)

id3v2.4 has more fields.
many things changed apperently but seems minor.
id3v2.3 can be desired since winamp doesn't support id3v2.4

I've tried this and was not very impressed, not a very polished Windows application, but then it is free. Also, it seems to lag my system for about a second when I quit it.

just out of curiousity.  When saving id3v2 tags in Winamp2.80 what version does it save them in.

The reason that i ask is for some reason i assumed that winamp saved them as version id3v2.4. (i dont know why i assumed that, i just did for some odd reason....)

anyways i noticed that when viewing the header of an *.mp3 file saved in winamp2.8 it is different then the ones saved with Tag&rename that saves them in the 2.3 format.

does winamp save in a earlier id3v2.x format?? or somthing??

The softwares you have listed don't support it.

winamp uses id3v2.3

I think id3v2.2 is not used anymore.

there is a difference between reading and writting the tags.
Any good tagger should at least read all version.

shouldnt there be a standard for tagging *.mp3's

id3v1 would have been great if there just didnt limit the number of charators that could be used. it was nice that the whole file didnt have to be rewrote when editing/adding tagged information.

now there is id3v2, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 ......blah...etc...


whats next, using ape tagging for tagging .mp3s.
maybe thats an idea..........

There a few ID3v2.2 taggers floating around.  I am not really sure of much of anything that supports 2.4

I'm looking for a software for tag v.2.2 because one of my friend brings me mp3s tagged with this version and I'd like to modify the tag but the only software that let me do this is Winamp. The other tagging softwares don't work with that version.
My friend uses iTunes v2.0.2 on a Macintosh.

I use ID3-Tagit ( http://www.id3-tagit.de ). It's freeware and has the most comprehensive ID3v2 tagging control I've seen. Not the easist for batch jobs, but does what I need. I think it might be able to handle ID3v2.2 (-> ID3v2.3 or ID3v2.4)

Songs-DB (http://www.songs-db.com) uses ID3Lib as a DLL for reading and writing ID3 tags. It should be able to read even older versions of ID3v2 tags. And if you find that something doesn't work, you can always add it, because there are source codes of ID3Lib available

1. How do you view the ID3 tag in the mp3file directly as above?

2. Sometimes winamp doesn't show the artist or title...just says artist1...when I know there is an ID3 tag in the mp3 file....why?

perhaps the tag is saved in id3v2.4?
winamp only supports ide3v2.3.
