Noise problem using Winamp and other players

Hello,

I'm getting random clicks when playing mp3's on my PC using certain players.  The clicks aren't very loud, but are frequent and very obvious on both my headphones and speakers.  The only players that I don't hear the noise on are Windows Media Player and the one that comes with Adaptec CD Creator.  I would prefer to use another player with better features than WM9, but I'm stuck with it for now.  Any ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Here are the others with the noise (all were current versions):

Foobar
Winamp, +/- MAD plugin
Media Jukebox
RealPlayer

My PC uses Win2k and a Santa Cruz soundcard.  I don't seem to have this problem when playing CD's.

Thanks.

1. Yes, I get them on all mp3's I try.
2. I only have a few wav files for comparison...same problem
3. They are random - I'll replay a passage and the noise won't be in the same spot.

Do you have a NVidia video card? Are the crackling more frequent when you load programs or scroll a webpage?
Have you tried in Winamp using WaveOut and DirectSound playback to see if the crackling is different?

I had this problem some time ago. Disabling Moonlight Odio Dekoda fixed it.

Hello...

My video card is a Radeon 7200.  I've had this problem regularly with the PC completely idle, and have noticed no association with any activity I'm doing at the time.

I only tried Winamp with the default setup and the MAD plugin.  I assumed the problem wouldn't need any special configuration to eliminate.

The noise isn't a crackling.  It's just random clicks similar to when listening to an LP.  I just find it really strange that it happens with everything but Media Player.

Thanks for the help.

how old are the soundcard and speakers? you might have some kind of bad connection somewhere in the chain. I experienced much the same thing, and it was that the the plug for the cable from my sub to the satellites had died on me...

Is this happening during other sounds? gaming, etc? that could indicate a hardware problem that would be hard to circumnavigate with software....

Do you by any chance have a VIA chipset?

Hi,

The PC is 3 years old now.  I've never had games on this PC.  I get the problem with both speakers and headphones.  Again, I hear this problem with all software players except WM9.

No VIA chipset.

Try moving your TBSC to a different slot.  Make sure it has it's own IRQ.

What Motherboard do you have?

Yes, that's a good guess. I had once a problem with interrupt sharing (my SB shared the interrupt with the graphics card). That caused regular clicks when playing music. It worked fine for some years but the addition of one device (my new leet USB DSL) caused this unwanted behaviour (IRQs beeing reassigned automatically by Windows, when installing it).

If everything fails (you cannot influence the interrupts on Win2K!!, so try to move the card to another slot or deinstall all unnecessary devices), update the driver for "Computer" in the Device Manager from "ACPI-PC" to "Standard PC".

But beware: all other drivers will have to be re-installed and the automatic windows shut down won't work anymore.
