An iPod rip-off to be released

Announced by the Korean DCube, the release of the NHD-150.

With FM radio (and recording), seems to have a FM Transmitter.

One thing I'm quite sure, Apple won't let it happen, as they did with e-Power and their iMac PC clone.

Time will teach us all.

Looks better than an iPod mini, probabbly will be cheaper too.

What's wrong with competition? Apple did not invent portable music..

I do not think that  Apple patended or trademarked white color for music player, neither  buttons agenced in a circle.

Oh no, Vauxhall have released another motorised vehicle with 4 wheels?  Will Ford put a stop to it?

And what about look and feel?

Apple has sued about the e-Power and the eOne and won, it was really closely ressembling the iMac. Mac Observer.

They were computers with the look and feel of the iMac that could have misled buyers. Apple fought for it.

Remember, Apple and Microsoft were in court for Look & Feel. (But they settled)

No AAC, so not really an iPod clone
On the other hand, Apple seems to understand this time that to make something big business, there must be alternative vendors. They might complain though if licensing issues are involved.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

And what about look and feel?

I've seen a lot of Nokia designs on far-eastern long-range and wireless phones, but not mobiles - anyway they were even closer to original design than this.

But I haven't heard about any lawsuit concerning those..

Wow, I might buy that thing just for the Ogg support, which iPod does not have (or am I mistaken?).

....though, if I'm not mistaken, Apple did patent the scroll-wheel design on their iPod, which is similar to this one.

A clone of the iPod (mostly of the new iPod Mini)

It looks nothing like the iPod mini (though closer to it in specs/size).

It's more a rip off of the 1st generation iPod that had the buttons round the scrollwheel. The later iPods have a horizontal row of 4 buttons under the screen. The iPod mini has the buttons built into the scroll wheel.

Also you can't get a white iPod mini.

Well, if they managed to sell it between $100 and $150 I would probably get one of these.

The one thing that will separate the original iPod from the cloned version.  The iPod has a patented touch sensitive scroll wheel. (at least in the 3rd generation)  If the NHD-150D wants to compete with the iPod then the price have to be considerably low and its has to have a navigation features that compare.  Honestly, I think its a rip off; however, Apple needs competion because competion drives quality and technology.

As from pricing I have one thing to say.  You get what you pay for.  It will be interesting what the product warranty and lithium battern hold up.

From a business appoarch I wouldn't be concerned some much about consuming a market perctange but have major companies like Sony or Toshiba buy you out and absorb you into their company.  (Just a thought, not a fact)

Now ladies, what you seam to have all missed is that this is more closely related to the iPod than you think.  Whose DSP is powering this baby?

I'll give you a clue...

1.  It's a Scottish company
2.  their chips can be found making Xboxs smart
3.  ok they make the iPod sound ever so sweet

So have you got it yet?  Wolfson  Microelectronics www.wolfson.co.uk

Yeah they are so smart these guys that I would work for them ;-) if I wasn't so dedicated to my employer.

Love,
Fairy

COMPETION is a good thing, but CREATIVITY is even better.

It sort of looks like an ipod, but Apple did not invent the portable music player and cannot patent the color white. If the interface works out to be too close, then they might consider it I suppose.
Since this portable won't accept iTMS songs I rather doubt that myself.

The addition of an integrated FM radio and the OGG VORBIS support are nice touches, as is the 96KHz capable DAC.

The Wolfson DAC+integrated amp page they're using can be found here.

Apple was so litigious at the time that you can be sure they wouldnt have settled if only they hadn't figured out that Microsoft already knew they had "pinched" the majority of their "original" ideas (for the Lisa, followed by the Mac) from the innovative folks at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center.

So long as the batteries work I don't see how they can call it similar to an iPod..

seems like one of their mp3 player (the most expensive one in their shopping section) , model NMP-612TD/512M, is worth more than $270 usd. and assuming that new model there is better... you get the idea.

Not sure myself.  Neither look all that great.  The colored Ipod minis are probably the worst looking mp3s players I've seen.  They make make the Zen look sexy . . .

Anyway lets get real here.  My 5 year old Rio player had the same layout as the Ipod (and same size too).  Apple innovated the scroll wheel, not the idea of putting buttons in a circle.

So the white area between the silver circles in the top picture does nothing?

That scroll wheel is hardly inovative, remove the middle button and you have what? a volume wheel, HiFis have had those for 50 years...
