Iron Maiden's Eddie

Hi,
  I love Iron Maiden. But I don't know anything about Eddie. Who is he and what does he stand for?

All I know is that he gets his name from the fact that most British people will leave off the "H" sound on words such as head.  "Head" became "Ed", which became "Eddie".
