Progress of the next Exact Audio Copy
Awhile back I wrote to Andre Wiethoff asking about the progress of EAC, today I found a reply & I thought It would be interesting for users at HA to know what is coming for the next release of arguably the best CD ripper around, so here is our conversation,

Quote
I'm eagerly awaiting the next EAC release as many others & because it has been so long I would to ask a few questions. Please tell me as much as you can, these are some questions I have please be as detail as possible,

a) What improvements/bug fixes have you done so far (for the next release)?

b) What improvements/bug fixes do you plan on doing? If not answered,

c) Will the error detection/correction algorithm be improved?

d) (How)/Will compression options be improved?

e) (How)/Will the CD-Writer be improved?

f) Will we see extended .m3u playlists?

g) Will freedb access be improved?

h) Will CUE sheets be improved?

a) LAME.DLL support of alt-presets, 52x burn support, removed some tools for TOC recovering, new native interface (also Firewire/USB devices), sample rate conversion (from 44.1 kHz) on compression (e.g. to 22050, mono, 8 bit) is now using EACs internal sample rate converter, smaller fixes

b) Plextools like cache defeating (as command line option), bugfix for command line option "-extract" (will be "-extractwav" and work), Accurate Rip and a surprise feature (nothing big though), smaller fixes

c) Not for the next versions...

d) I had planned OggDLL support, but it seems quite big. Perhaps I do FLAC DLL support before that.

e) I don't know. I planned to use an external writer to be called by EAC, but I didn't find a good command line tool for DAO (CDRecord and DAO are not doing what I need), perhaps I can use the Pinnacle SDK somehow...

f) As soon I get hand on some (half) official documentation of the extendend playlists...

g) What do you need?

h) What do you need?

cu, Andre

For

f) Can anyone provide infomation on this?

g) I don't have any complaints, as long as I set-up a proxy server all is fine however lot's of people at Digital-Inn seemed to have problems, maybe it's a non-issue, any comments?

h) I was thinking of simplifying CUE sheet options & not writing full paths e.g. "Track01" & assume that the files are in the same directory as the CUE sheet, any comments?

Well, for e) and h) my current request would be proper FLAGS 4CH support and documentation.

From Andre's Site (The Thank-You's) you can see that he received a whole bunch of new drives from Plextor for test purposes, including a Premium, a 708A, a PX-116 DVD etc. ... therefore, no more tricks (Plextools Pro - Silent Mode) will be needed to set the write speed with the Plex Premium.

The rewritten interface is a nice thing, too since many users switched to external USB2.0/IEE1394 drives in the last months.

The next version will also be able to rip with C2 enabled when using the PX-708A which simply is a bugfix.

What I wish for isn't better FreeDB support (most problems in my system emerge from FreeDB database problems themselves, not from EAC) but a more sophisticated replace function (maybe freely configurable) and multiple encoding support as well.

I hope that André re-activates the "Use C2" option (according to him, the code is still there, but only the sitch is disabled) since I sometimes achieved non-accurate but good-sounding results under difficult conditions where normal secure mode failed with audible clicks and pops.

After all, it is good to see that EAC still gets some development ... and I'm very curious about the new version number

I've chimed in on this before, but...

before we or other people rush on with our endless requests about support for whatever format, we should remember what Andre does best: understanding the innards of audio extraction and error correction.

I'd much more like to see Andre crack the final hard parts of error correction (as discussed in EAC forums) algorithms rather than tinker with XYZ-format native supports. After all, the software already has an external compressor interface that works very well.

Then again, I hope Andre decides what to do himself and just keeps the development going by choosing bits that are interesting and fun for himself.

That's all I can hope for.

Just my two cents worth.

If EAC were a naked ripping tool (incl. cue-sheet issues), i'd still love it.
There are ecxellent encoding-, tagging- and burning-tools around.

This is not an advice to the author, of course, but my feedback what i set value on.

EAC already does use an additional physical RAM buffer ... you just cannot set the buffer size like you can do with Feurio!, Nero or CDR-Win

Thinking out loud, perhaps Andre would be best to prise the hidden 'SCSI ignore extra sessions' command that the Plextors need to rip copy protected discs from Plextor, yet the only program that can do that is Plextools and they are not saying how.

Try EAC with command line option "-nomultisession" ...

see here for details ... http://www.digital-inn.de/showpost.php?p=48917&postcount=21

Slightly OT: There seem to be some command line options for EAC, like -extractmp3. I read about one of them once in a while here or on EAC forum but I've never found a list of all available commandline options. Does anyone know where to find this?

What I'd like to see is more functions/options accessable via command line.

Haha, sure. Nevermind, as soon as he releases his new version I will
happily document what he calls "Plextools' method".

Err, wtf are you talking about ?? You could convince me that Andre is a
good windows coder, but for having discussed this with him in the past I
can tell you that he doesn't understand how CIRC works ; someone like
Pio outsmarts him 10 times on error correction. What algorithm do you
think he can 'crack' to improve EAC ?

A few commands share the same interface, but these should do the trick :

Enable single session :
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
E9 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 01 06 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
E9 10 01 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 01 06 01 00 00 00 00 00

Disable single session :
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
E9 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 01 06 01 00 00 00 00 00

That's what the command line option "-nomultisession" does IIRC ...

@tigre ... just search the EAC board for further explanation of the command line options ... they are out there.

@spath ... Andre did some testing during the last weeks (including some methods of FUA implementation that did not work in the end so he decided to check how plextools handle caching issues) ... good "windows coder" (using your terminology, sorry for that but IMO he is a little more than a windows coder) that he is, he claims to have found a way to implement the method used by Plextools into EAC ... we will see whether this works out or not.

spath, you seem to be very knowledgeable, why don't you create a library of error detection & recovery methods for CD audio? or maybe add to the cdparanoia libs?

Progress? Exact Audio Copy? I don't understand

Exact Audio copy is an audio extraction tool ("CD ripper") which creates very good copies of CDs especially when they are scratched/dirty/malpressed/etc.

Basically one uses EAC when CDex or dBpoweramp produces clicks.  Of course Spoon is working very hard on adding Paranoid ripping to dBPoweramp.  dbPoweramp does a good job of repairing damaged "TOCs" by the way.

Fairy

PS- Does anyone know if it's possible to get EAC to create ~\<artist>\<album>\<nn><name>.mp3 format directories when it rips CDs?

I hope this helps it is more complete then the FAQ as I recall. I saved it from a post on the EAC forum long ago, I suppose there may have been more switches added since then.

Code: [Select]
To deactivate some features (that doesn't work with your drive) :

-nostopcommand
-notestunit
-nospeedsel
-noreadsub
-nocdtext
-nomultisession

To automate EAC :

-extract
-extractmp3

For writing :

-noshowbuffer
-forceplextor
-forceteac
-forcesony

See you, tec

It should be possible to use the same method for Plextor drives (if you find out how). Of  more interest is to also find a better way to flush or disable the read cache of other drives.
The good thing about EAC is that you can rip with almost any drive and (with the right settings) have good results. A lot of (faster) rippers rely on the drive to handle DAE correctly, which is not always the case.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

According to his own statement, Andre did find out how Plextools handle drive caching issues and tested if this procedure would be applicable to other drives as well which didn't turn out to be the case ...

Spath,

while I appreciate your apparent expertise (I have no real expertise myself to really evaluate that of yours on this field), I shall offer you a word of wisdom nevertheless:

If you have nothing else to contribute, except to belittle and make mockery of others, please do not contribute.

I am sure that you as a talented and skilled person can understand and accept that maybe not all people are as skilled as you, without having to mock them.

So what, if you think others are wrong in your opinion or don't agree with you? Surely you don't need to resort to flaming.

We can have a friendly discussion after all. All it takes is a little patience and friendliness.

As for your question about what is the part that Pio and some others have discussed in reference to EAC and error correction, the discussion can be dound in EAC forums at digital-inn. Maybe we shouldn't replicate it here (not sure, I'm asking)?

Friendly regards,
Halcyon

PS If the only thing we can do when talking with authors (whether that be EAC, OGG, MPC or other authors) is to bitch, demand, moan and attack the person, I don't think we'll have much to look forward to, in terms of future development of those developments in question
