Whence 44.1

I'm just curious... why are CDs sampled at 44.1KHz? Why not 44.0, 44.2 or 41 + pi?

It just seems funny to use a non-integer number.

Actually it's integer, because it's 44.1 KILOhertz, as in 44100 hertz.

But I agree, some history on that number would be interesting.

44.1kHz was chosen to fit a digital audio signal onto video tape,
in the area used to store the picture. Video was the digital audio
storage medium before we had CD, and the rate of 44.1
is a logical result of that and the need for a safe rate
that could include up to 20kHz, which was considered to be
the human threshold of hearing back then. The first rate
that simply worked (and was interchangeable with video,
since CD-mastering was done on video) was 44.1
The 44100 Hertz comes from the calculation
using video-frames, where you can have
3 samples per field of 490/2 lines;
3 x 245 x 60 Hz = 44100 Hz

I prefer the other links - the jthz site is so bad I'd avoid linking to it.

It's not just "mastering" - the recording process was often carried out directly onto standard video tape via digital > video (or more often analogue > digital > video) convertors. If you look up Sony PCM F1 you can find such a device.

Cheers,
David.

44100 Hz means 22050 Hz bandwidth.

20 kHz is the human ear's audio range.

Thanks, fascinating information! I knew the answer would be something like the scan rate of video recorders. It just makes sense.

Yes 2 ears, indeed!

I don't know about that - the "more recent" r3mix forum has gone anyway. Did anyone archive it?

And whatever happened to Walrus and cherrycastle?

Cheers,
David.
