Unrecoverable playback error: Unsupported audio stream format

I just downloaded Foobar2000 on a new Win11 machine. When I try to play a file (from a CD or .wav) I get: Unrecoverable playback error: Unsupported audio stream format. I've downloaded all three versions of 2.24.3 with the same error, so it must be something I'm doing wrong. I've used Foobar2000 in the past but not in years. Current system is i5-14400. Soundblaster Audigy FXv2 Files play fine with the media player. Thanks for your help.

I don't know what condition triggers that error message, but based on https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,123589.0.html at least wrong output device is the cause in some cases. Can you check what the linked thread suggests?
Also what is the output device you have selected in foobar2000 preferences?

I get that every time I move a portable install to a different PC, and did on the same PC when updating from win11 22H2 to win11 24H2.  The fix is just to re-select the output device first, like Case's post suggests.  When this happens it has also raised my volume slider to 100% (talk about getting your attention) so be sure to lower that BEFORE playing your first song!
