YouTube/YouTube music has begun offering 256Kbps audio for premium users

High-quality audio: Premium members will experience new audio enhancements, enjoying high-quality 256kbps audio on music videos with more clarity and depth.
I wonder what the codec is, probably Opus again. If there are premium YouTube users here you could probably use youtube-dl or yt-dl to download audio files and check if there's something radically different vs the existing 160Kbps or so audio.

Must be enabled in https://youtube.com/new

YT Music premium uses AAC-LC 256Kbps.  Maybe they're now using the format for YT Premium as well.  I suppose one could create a burner YT account and sign up for the Premium free trial to find out

That was my thought. Interesting news, but I wouldn't ever feed JDownloader etc. my Google credentials.

Idk. But youtube used both 256k Opus and LC-AAC for some music videos and mostly in youtube music. And the worst part is that those formats can't be downloaded with ytdlp (without the premium account), unlike premium VP9 1080 high bitrate.

Sure, but the itch is to analyse the files, we're HA here after all, hence downloading.

some like to listen to their music without streaming it.
maybe it's mix that one is particularly fond of. It can get tagged and cue sheets created for it for off-interwebz listening and archival purposes.

Also, things occasionally disappear from YouTube.  Some old stuff I like has.
It's your privilege to disagree, but that doesn't make you right and me wrong.
