How to update without loosing settings?

Currently running Foobar 2000 version 2.5 on the Mac.

How can I update to 2.6.5 safely, without loosing any settings?

Why do you think you will loose them?

There is no such thing as absolute certainty, so please back up the contents of the following folders.

Shift key + foobar2000 menu bar File >  Browse Configuration Folder > foobaar2000-v2
SHURE SRH1840, SENNHEISER HD660S2, SENNHEISER HD620S, SENNHEISER HD 490 Pro Plus, beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO, HiFiMAN Edition XS, Bowers & Wilkins P7, FiiO FT5, 水月雨 (MOONDROP) 空鳴 - VOID, Nakamichi Elite FIVE ANC, SONY WH1000XM5 (made a Upgrade/Balanced Cable by myself)

After working 50 years in the field and having more than once lost settings by some updating installer, I have developed a certain pessimism.

If I hold the shift key while clicking on "File" in the menu bar, I stll get the same menu as the usual File menu (i.e. holding down one of the shift keys, then clicking on File). There is no "Browse Configuration Folder" available.

I was not even aware that MacOS would support "shift-click in the menu bar" as a separate action. I'm running Monterey. Could it be that this feature has been added in later MacOS versions?

Shift key + File in foobar2000 menu bar I think there is a key that replaces this, otherwise Browse Configuration Folder will not be displayed. Then you just need to find the configuration folder in the application you installed yourself.

You need to press (and hold) Shift before you click File, though maybe this feature simply is not available in your version of foobar2000. (And yeah, this is totally not a Mac way where Option is used for such things—and it works even when File is already clicked, i.e. you don't have to press and hold it in advance.)

Well, it doesn't work neither with Shift nor with Option. I also tried the Control and the Command key, with no effect. So I guess this feature was not present yet in Foobar2000 2.5, at least not on the Mac.

It's something like this

foobar2000 for Mac, v2.24 preview 2024-10-28

As @Guildencrantz said, it may be a difference with foobar2000 for Mac, v2.5 (I forgot).

Do you know the folder path in Windows terms?
(I don't know how to do this on a MAC)

The path should look like this: /Users/rovf/Library/foobar2000-v2 — if we assume that 'rovf' is original poster's username.

Note that foobar2000 for Mac does not have an actual installer - the DMG just lets you copy the new application to your applications folder, and does nothing else. There's no way for it to alter your configuration in any way.
Microsoft Windows: We can't script here, this is bat country.

Thanks a lot. The path exists. Actually, the update went flawlessly and I didn't have to use the backup.
