iTunes Compilation Field Sets the Album Artist field to "Various Artists"

This wiki explains that the presence of the %ITUNESCOMPILATION% tag causes Foobar2000 to set an empty Album Artist field to "Various Artists":
https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Metadata_Compatibility_1.1.6_changes

I only use the Album Artist field for my favorite artists, so I have many, many compilations with empty Album Artist fields.  A lot of them also have the %ITUNESCOMPILATION% tag so their Album Artist tag now says "Various Artists" even though the tag is empty in MP3Tag.

Also, it seems like only Foobar2000 can see the %ITUNESCOMPILATION% tag because I can't see it in MP3Tag.
In MP3Tag, it just shows up as %COMPILATION%.

  • Is there a way to change this behavior?
  • Or do I have to work around it?
  • What's the best way to delete the %ITUNESCOMPILATION% tag?
  • Can I just convert it to the %COMPILATION% tag?

Thanks for any help!
