Why not rip to ALAC in Exact Audio Copy?
using refalac https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=EAC_and_QAAC
or

Is this  a 'Tracks' rip (one-track-per-file)?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Could you post the text from the .cue file? (or attach file?)

Note: EAC will create a noncompliant CUE file to preserve the INDEX 00 (gap) information when each track is ripped to a separate file. fre:ac may not support noncompliant CUE files.
Note 2: fre:ac only supports .cue files encoded UTF-8 with BOM or ISO-8859-1.

yes, you are right !
strangely, i can move the .cue from Easy Audio Copy, CUERipper & dBpower to fre:ac & they all work

is there a setting on Exact Audio copy or fre:ac, which i can change to support this ?

thanks, most appreciated

As for the .cue file above (I created dummy files)
you can drop into CUETools and 'Correct filenames' (I have 'Overwrite' enabled)
This will change encoding from UTF-8 to UTF-8 with BOM
and remove the 'path' leaving only the filenames (fre:ac isn't finding the files)

modified .cue file attached

Note: the original .cue file created by EAC will load into fre:ac if the .cue file is located outside the 'path' used inside the .cue

Code: [Select]
FILE "VA - Rock 'n' Roll - 2009 - Original Hits - Rock 'n' Roll CD 6\01 - Track01 - Unknown Artist.wav" WAVE
