DVD/CD/Bluray writers that can burn CD-Rs at x4 speed

Hello,

Do you know of any new DVD/CD/Bluray writer model that is still available that can burn CD-Rs at a speed of x4?

Thanks for any help.

No, I don't know of any. Perhaps you can explain why you are looking for a drive with this functionality?

If you happen to find a drive that can burn at this speed, it is probably not optimized for burning at that speed, and burning at higher speeds will give a better result (better quality, lower read error rate).

So, why are you looking for a drive that can specifically burn at such a low speed?

I burn audio on CD-Rs and I found that my stereo setup somehow liked CD-Rs burned at x4.
Also, I have noticed that the color of the burned CD-R is consistent when burning at x4 when I used my old Plextor PX-755SA, which is now not functional anymore. I have about another 3 recent DVD writers from Pioneer and Lite-on which do not support burning as slow as x4, so I use x16 which produces a burned disc with changing color shading on the burned surface. In many cases you can observe circular shades on the burned surface of the CD-R.

With your old burner and old batch of CD-R, yes. Could very well be that with other media and another drive, your stereo setup has a preference for another burn speed. AFAIK there is no reason to assume the speed is magic in itself, it is the combination of burning drive, batch of CD-R, write speed and reading drive that makes a good read.

I agree....it is the combination. Basically I had found a good combination using Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs burned with the Plextor drive at x4. Using more modern CD-Rs burned with other drives at x16 is in a number of occasions causing the stereo not recognizing the disc. Never happened before. And this problem do not happen with older burned CD-Rs. In addition there are these changing color shades on the burning side of the CD-R probably due to recalibration of the drive while burning. .... Very annoying ... OCD triggering :D

Well, the color changing is probably the difference between constant linear velocity burning (CLV) and zoned constant linear velocity burning (ZCLV). The drive that was suggested specifically states it can burn CD-R at CLV at 10x, so I would take that one. It will probably have the same color from start to finish (when burning at 10x, thus CLV) because of that.

Is there a software that informs what type of burning/reading a drive support (CLV, ZCLV, CAV, etc) and at what speeds?

Perhaps Nero Discspeed, but I haven't used that for a while

I have Nero Discspeed. I do not think it provides this type of info on the drives. I will show only the strategy used when testing a burn.

You could try the command-line tool cdrecord.exe which is part of the cdrtools package.

First run scgcheck.exe to identify the ID of your drive (in my case it is 1,0,0. See example below).
Paste these two lines (with your drive ID!) into a batch file and run it:

cdrecord dev=1,0,0 -prcap >_drive-info.txt
cdrecord dev=1,0,0 -media-info >>_drive-info.txt

Thanks, I would look into this.

Question: Can't you use imgburn and tell the burning software to use 4x writing speed?

Imgburn will tell you what speeds are supported by the selected drive in the form of a list depending on the type of disc you insert (CD-R, DVD-R, etc). I think you need to select one of the supported burn speeds, and all modern writers I can find do not support burning speeds as low as x4.
