how can i play real media files in foobar2000?

how can i play real media files(*.rm,*.ram) in foobar2000?
is there any component?

i haven't heard of any component to do this. playing rm files in a player other than real player is always difficult as it is a closed codec. There are a few other programs about that do it though Real alternative for example.

Whoa there, Antares, relax. Everybody knows about that. We just need a way to do with Foobar2000 what is being done with Media Player Classic. If I could play .ra files with Foobar, hell, it would be great. I have some files that would work so much better with Foobar2000 than with MPC and its rather antiquated playlist.

...I think, it's a question of licence!  It wouldn't go without licence from Real Media - and they will never allow.

i know that media player classic can play rm files.
Also Winamp can play rm files with a plugin(innover's real plugin).
I think they all use a realplayer ActiveX component(maybe).
i can write a delphi program to play rm files with real ActiveX component.
but i don't know how to write a component which can work in foobar2000 to play rm files.

Nox, do it, and some people are gonna really love you in this forum. To use Foobar2000 for .ra would be many people's final request for another supported format.

Quick question... excuse my harshness...

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY REAL MEDIA?!

Real Media has to be the most loss-full format I've ever seen. Mind you I havent used it in a few years, is it good now?

For example to listen to a preview of a song on amazon.de or somewhere else.

AFAIK: no. On the aforementioned site at least, you only get an impression of how the songs do not sound.

Now I'm interested, if someone can come up with a real reason.

Streaming really, but it would be kind off pointless using foobar since there would be no video in video streams.

Just use Media Player Classic or even the Helix DNA client player.

I personally would like to be able to use a single audio player and avoid installing bloating software from suspicious sources (read Microsoft, Real.com, Musicmatch)

I enjoy listening to the BBC radio stations which are only available on DAB or online (e.g. BBC7 for comedy). These are streamed in audio only RealPlayer format.

These two things conflict with each other. I would therefore love to see a plugin for foobar which enabled me to use it for this purpose.

================
As a point of interest the BBC experimented with using the wonderful OGG format to stream but apparently hit licensing issues (the content not the codec obviously) and unfortunately had to discontinue this until further notice.

Any plugin that played real audio would need you to install real player anyway... atleast all of the alternate ones out there right now use the real player installed codecs to decode the .ra files.

On the OGG thing, I always wondered why they stopped providing ogg streams, I'm guessing the issue was that there were a lot of readily available tools to save ogg content?  Where as to save .ra files you have to go out of your way to find a tool that will do it?

If JetAudio can play RealMedia Files (RA, RAM, RM, RMM) without installing Real, i don't see why Foobar couldn't.

Well, if you want to purchase the use of the real audio engine from Real.com then you can make something that doesn't require the installation of Real Player to get the engine on your computer.
From reading some of the FAQ questions and the fact that jetaudio is a company making money off the product, they have done just that, purchased a copy of the Real Engine to use in their product.

oh i see. makes sense.

i don't really want to see foobar supporting anything "Real" anyway.

p.s. jetaudio (free version) is a great alternative for Real playback (audio and video) and has no spyware (afaik), but lots of bloat.

i don't like realmedia format audio too.
but sometimes we have to use these files.
so i think maybe we need such a plugin.
if you don't like it ,you can remove the plugin or don't install it.

Well said, Nox. Thats exactly right. Your words should be read before more people come in and bash the idea of somebody doing a plugin.

Many didn't like the idea of a WMA plugin, but now there is a really good one and nobody is complaining. The same will happen with a Real plugin for Foobar.

Not the Helix DNA client , it comes with all the nessessary codecs in a self contained zip. Its suppossed be opensourced too..

Its command line but the dev rel 4 had a simple GUI too.

But well it comes from RealNetworks so if u dont trust them you should use Media Player Classic (or jetaudio but i havent tried that). Plus you have to agree to a long license to download it, as well as give your personal details, and another couple for the sources.

Though in my experience Media Player Classic doesnt always work perfectly and has no option for setting your bandwidth (it seems to use whatever the real libraries use, a setting in the reg somewhere..), kinda important for streaming realmedia.

Anyway, my point before was .ram files dont always link to either video or audio, so associating them with foobar would be a pain if you use video streaming too.

Other plugins for Winamp etc. handle video too, not that they work.

Oh and you could just download RealAlternative from k-lite if you needed the real player libraries, plus it asks you to set the bandwidth on install.

for those who need to hear real, but don't want the spyware, get the "enterprise desktop" version.  it doesn't bug you to buy it, and it's free.  they just make it hard to find on the site.

enjoy, it at least WORKS BETTER than most of the crappy other players that just wrap around the codec.
