Noob question on Foobar and Focusrite USB interface

Hallo,
I have a question that for you may be trivial. I hav a focus rite 2i2 gen 2 that can play up to 96Khz.
I always kept it at 44Khz from its control panel and I thought that with its native ASIO driver the sample rate would have been auto switched to that of the song played in Foobar. But now I'm not so sure anymore...
Do I have to set the 2i2 to 96Khz (or 192Khz if that was supported) from its panel, the highest sample rate, to have Foobar play the songs in native format?
The question is if Foobar with the ASIO driver will auto switch frequency and bit depth on the hardware or you have to set the highest one manually, and that would mean downsampling when you have 44Khz music though.

Thanks for your help

I think you want to use the Wasapi plugin below if you want sample rate matching.

I haven't used the ASIO plugin for a while but I'll give it a test at home tonight to see if it does sample rate matching (I'm pretty sure it doesn't though).

Just tested ASIO on my DAC and the sample rate does change depending on the file being played.

Thank you! This is a good news indeed. But I guees that if I use the default drivers output it won't go trhough ASIO drivers even if the card has its own ASIO drivers.
So I will have to installa the ASIO plugin or as you suggested use the WASAPI one? I mean with the default drivers selected in Foobar the frequency switch won't occurr I imagine.

EDIT: I can definitely confirm that with the asio drivers the frequency is swtiching based on the song format since Focusrite notification appears showing sample rate changes. So this won't be the case with default drivers or selecting the audio card output speaker.
Going to test WASAPI right now. Note that when using ASIO drivers, Windows volume won't have any effect, you have to use Foobar or the audiocard volume if it has any hardware knob. You can still play other sounds from other software though (example youtube audio while playing foobar with ASIO)
